Toronto – Canadians went to the poll on Monday to elect their next government. The Liberal Party of Canada emerged a winner in what was said to be one of the most “consequential elections” in the history of the country.

They were able to win a minority government – at least three more seats were needed for a majority government. This is the fourth consecutive Federal election win for the party.

Based on official results from Elections Canada, it secured a total of 169 seats in Parliament Hill while the conservatives raised the bars to 144 seats.

The conservative party of Canada made significant gains although its leader, Pierre Poilievre, lost his own seat in Ottawa Carlton to a Liberal Candidate Bruce Fanjoy by about five percent votes.

Mr. Poilievre represented the riding for two decades.

The biggest loss in this election goes to the New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP).  It won 25 seats in the last Federal election but in this one it plummeted to 7. Jagmeet Singh, its leader, announced in his election night speech that he is resigning as the leader.  He struggled with tears when making his last speech as leader of the party.

Bloc Québécois has won a significant number of seats – 22.  The number represents a significant loss compared to the 2021 election; the party won 32 seats back then.

The Green Party of Canada won only 1 seat in this election.

Both the Liberals and Conservatives have reportedly won seats in areas they struggled in the previous Federal election.

“My message to every Canadian is this ; no matter where you live, no matter what language you speak, no matter how you voted, I will always do my best to represent everyone who calls Canada home,” Mark Carney said during his election night speech organized  in Ottawa, at the Party’s headquarters.

Mr. Mark also congratulated leaders of opposition parties for their campaigns and “for serving Canada.”

“For those who were elected, particularly Liberals, who were elected, I am looking forward to working together to deliver for Canadians…” he added, highlighting that  he will be guided by Canadian values.  He was specific about it. “humility, ambition and unity…I will do my best to uphold these values,” he said as seen from the CBC video embedded below.

He sees humility to also mean “about recognizing that one of the responsibilities of government is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” in a way highlighting the challenge the United States is posing to Canada.

“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never …that will never ever happen,” he exclaimed while heralding that the “days and months to come” will be challenging. He called on Canadians to support one another. He also pledged to support workers and businesses.

Some observers see the liberal win as a “comeback” pointing out that it was unimaginable given the unprecedented unpopularity of Justin Trudeau who announced his resignation in January this year.
