Toronto – Earlier this week, Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Commission made claims that it has received an agenda from “Fano affiliated armed groups” operating in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
The Fano Force operating in all areas of the Amhara region rejected the Dialogue Commission’s claim that it had received agenda when it was gathering in the Amhara region of Ethiopia last week. They even expressed, as reported in several media outlets incling Ethio news and Anchor media, resentment towards the commission describing it as ” a tool for Abiy Ahmed’s regime.” Major opposition parties operating in the country have been openly criticizing the commission as bipartisan to the government and have not demonstrated an attribute of neutrality.
The commission is now projecting a new narrative. It said the agenda it received in the Amhara region is “from armed groups outside of Fano forces.”
He said, as reported by BBC Amharic, “there are several groups operating in the Amhara region outside of Fano forces. However, the identity of the group is still undisclosed.
“I can speak with certainty that the group that submitted the agenda is not Fano,” the commissioner is cited as saying. He has been saying the commission is not authorized by the group to disclose their identity. There was no report before that there exists an armed group in the Amhara region outside of Fano forces. However, there had been claim from Fano forces that a group government organized “as Fano” had been operating in the region usually engaged in criminal activity including kidnapping and looting.
BBC Amharic also cited Professor Mesfin Araya, Commissioner of the Commission, as saying the group submitted agenda “with a conviction that if the dialogue is undertaken correctly and reached an agreement, it is possible to end armed struggle.”
Professor Mesfin is cited as saying that the group listed reasons why it was compelled to take up arms to struggle and sent it to the commission as agenda items for the dialogue. Again, the items are unspecified. However, the commissioner highlighted that the Agenda the group forwarded “contains questions that could be questioned within the framework of the constitution.”
The commission aims to undertake agenda gathering in the Tigray region of Ethiopia ,where there had been a bloody two years conflict , and in the diaspora too.
