Toronto – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, arrived in Asmara, the Eritrean capital, on Thursday afternoon, according to an announcement by Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister of Information, on his social media page.
President Isaias Afwerki welcomed General al-Burhan upon his arrival at Asmara International Airport.
The Eritrean Ministry of Information stated that “President Isaias Afwerki and General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan will discuss the enhancement of bilateral ties, recent developments in the Sudanese conflict, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.”
Eritrea reportedly supported al-Burhan’s forces during Sudan’s two-year civil war. Notably, the TPLF faction led by Debretsion—which has been accused of establishing clandestine ties with the Eritrean government—was also involved in the Sudanese conflict, with its fighters allegedly fighting alongside al-Burhan’s forces.
Recently, Eritrea has been strengthening alliances with regional nations, including Egypt and Somalia.
The visit follows General al-Burhan’s forces regaining full control of Khartoum at the end of last month after ousting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), ending their nearly two-year occupation of the city.

Such engagement by all countries of The Horn of Africa is something that should be applauded and encouraged. Centuries old and recent history in particular has shown us all that when a single country in the region is in chaos others will also be directly or indirectly affected. I hope sooner if not later every one of them will regain their Allah gifted senses and work together for the good of their citizens.
