Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Senior officials in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region convened in Bahir Dar for high-level consultations focused on peace-building, sustainable development, and strengthening governance, the Amhara Media Corporation reported.

Chief Administrator Arega Kebede led the discussions, outlining major initiatives for the year, including a 25-year strategic roadmap for short and mid-term priorities and institutional reforms. “The priority now is preparing our institutions for the future,” Arega stated, emphasizing the need to restructure executive bodies based on a recent study.

The talks, attended by Deputy Chief Administrator Abdu Hussein (PhD), Regional Council Speaker Fantu Tesfaye, and Prosperity Party Amhara branch head Yirga Sisay, also addressed the pressing peace and stability issues plaguing the region. These discussions are expected to significantly influence the regional administration’s direction in the coming months.

The Amhara region has been gripped by a conflict between government security forces and Fano militias for the past two years, resulting in thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and widespread destruction. This prolonged instability has severely impacted basic services, disrupted livelihoods, and exacerbated a humanitarian crisis, prompting calls for urgent dialogue and de-escalation from local and international actors.

  1. Let’s hope and pray this peace building effort will succeed. Senseless and cruel violence has been upending innocent citizens lives in both Amhara and Oromia regions. Schools, healthcare facilities and other essential service providing institutions have been shuttered in many densely populated areas in the regions. People have been dying from easily avoidable deadly diseases. Cholera, TB, malaria and other communicable diseases are back in the news killing many. People are left to starve because farms have gone fallow due to lack of peace. This is what comes out of the demonic philosophy that preaches armed violence as the only way to solve domestic issues. As I have said umpteen times in the past, there hasn’t been a single armed group since The American War of Independence in 1776 that brought democratic governance after victory. None whatsoever!!! In fact, what has happened so far is such armed violence ended up replacing one regime by a most brutal one. You don’t need me to prove it you because all you have to do is just look around in that neighborhood.

Let’s hope and pray this blessed effort will succeed.
