Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed Brigadier General Abdiwahab Abdullahi Omar as the new Naval Commander, signaling a renewed focus on bolstering maritime security. This move comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its naval capabilities, which have been historically weak, to combat threats like piracy and terrorism.
President Mohamud emphasized the necessity of a functioning navy, stating, “The government is working to strengthen the Somali Navy so that it can take over the security and defense of our maritime borders, which are essential for our nationhood and unity.”
The appointment replaces Admiral Abdi Warsame, with President Mohamud urging the new commander to accelerate naval reform efforts. Recent years have seen increased recruitment and modernization within the Somali Navy, supported by international partners like Eritrea and Ethiopia. This push to rebuild the navy is part of a broader strategy to enhance Somalia’s overall defense capacity, including the revitalization of its Air Force.
President Mohamud’s administration is prioritizing the development of self-reliant security forces to address ongoing threats from terrorism and organized crime at sea. Through increased international cooperation and domestic reforms, Somalia aims to secure its territorial waters and protect its sovereignty, ensuring stability and security for the nation.
