Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in South Sudan for crucial talks with President Salva Kiir as political tensions in the country continue to escalate. His visit comes at a critical moment, with growing friction between Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar threatening to push the country back into conflict. Regional mediators have been working to ease tensions, but Kiir’s administration has accused Machar of stirring rebellion, placing him under house arrest—an alarming move that has raised concerns within the United Nations about the risk of renewed ethnic violence.
Museveni, whose troops have been invited to help secure the capital, Juba, described the discussions as an effort to “strengthen bilateral relations.” Kiir, on the other hand, emphasized that the focus would be on “current political developments.” The backdrop to these talks is a fragile peace between Kiir and Machar, who were on opposing sides during South Sudan’s brutal civil war from 2013 to 2018. The growing tensions have fueled worries about the country’s stability, while Uganda’s involvement—particularly its military presence and recent directives concerning the White Army militia—has sparked criticism from Machar’s camp. They argue that Uganda’s actions violate the existing arms embargo.
Political analysts believe Kiir’s moves are part of a broader strategy to consolidate power amid internal divisions and speculation over his potential successor. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are ramping up, with the African Union and East African leaders working urgently to prevent another conflict from erupting in the region.
