Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday conveyed a message in Tigrigna language to people in Tigray.

In a message entitled “Call for Proposals for President of the Tigray Interim Administration,”  he called on people in the region to send email to the office of the Prime Minister proposing as to whom they wish to be president of the Interim Tigray region administration for the next one year until general election time.

Abiy Ahmed conveyed the message on his X page.

His message is seen as a confirmation that Getachew Reda who led the Interim Administration for the past two years will no longer remain in the position for the rest of the term until general election.

When Abiy Ahmed appeared in the Parliament last week, he told members of the parliament that the Interim Administration will continue for the next one year. He also hinted that there might be changes to the leadership.

Capability to undertake tasks entrusted to the Interim Administration and maintain the region’s peace and stability are the key qualifications. He asked the people in the Tigray region of Ethiopia to suggest the candidates they trust. It is unclear if Getachew Reda will be accepted should he get public confidence.

The Tigray Region Interim Administration was an arrangement on the basis of  the Pretoria Agreement which ended the bloody two years war between the Abiy Ahmed led Federal government and TPLF led Tigray region administration. Eritrea was involved in the war on the part of Abiy Ahmed’s administration but was not part of the Pretoria Agreement which was signed in November 2022.

The TPLF, which now has two factions, was part of the Interim Administration arrangement process.   However, Abiy Ahmed said, last week, there was consultation with Getachew Reda, Tsadkan Gebretensae and Tadesse Worede (the latter two are deputy presidents). He hailed the Interim Administration for efforts to avert another war in the past two years.

Criticism and Resistance

The Prime Minister is criticized about the call. As is the case in other parts of Ethiopia, most of the people in the Tigray region live in the rural areas. Not only do they not have internet access, computer literacy is almost nil in rural Ethiopia. Abiy Ahmed seems to have totally disregarded the rural population in Tigray when he made a call for people to send an email proposing a leader for the  interim administration for the next one year.

Prime Minister Abiy’s call met with resistance from Debretsion Gebremichal’s faction. In a statement, released on Wednesday in the evening, accusing the Federal government of working unilaterally to extend the Interim Administration’s authority.

Debretsion’s faction argued that the Interim Administration is a part of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostility Agreement not the Federal government’s unilateral decision.  Debretsion led TPLF pointed out Getachew Reda was to be replaced by Tadesse Worede who served as deputy president during the Interim Administration.  It rejected the Prime Minister’s call for a proposal.

Abiy Ahmed’s administration recently accused the Debretion’s faction of working with “external forces” (presumably including Eritrea) to stir conflict in the region.

  1. Borkena,
You say, “most of the people in the Tigray region live in the rural areas. Not only do they not have internet access, computer literacy is almost nil in rural Ethiopia.” I think you need to be reminded that issues of our nation have always been settled among city dwellers. Rural folk are only called in to die for the stupidity of the corrupt elite.
