Ethiopia ‘s Ministry of Education has announced that 3700 schools are not operational in the Amhara region

Toronto – The Ethiopian government is admitting that millions of students are out of school in Amhara and other regions of Ethiopia due to conflict and other factors.
Berhanu Nega, Minister for Education, revealed it during a discussion in Bahir Dar, seat of the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
The event Berhanu attended was organized under the theme “Education for generation movement for infrastructure development for schools.”
DW Amharic cited him as saying of the 7. 8 million students who are out of school “4 million” are in the Amhara region.
“Generally as a nation of students who were supposed to go to school over 7.8 million children are out of school ; in the Amhara region alone over 4 million students are out of school due to the existing conflict,” said Berhanu.
There have been reports from other sources in the past one year and the number of students out of school in the Amhara region of Ethiopia seems to be significantly higher than what the education minister admitted. More than 80 percent of the Amhara region is still under the control of Fano forces. Schools are not operational.
The Ministry has admitted that more than 3,700 schools are not operational in the region due to the ongoing conflict. Notably, the Fano forces launched coordinated attacks across the Amhara region targeting Defense Force Camps which the later linked to Megbe Haile, a senior TPLF military general.
On the other hand, the Minister for Education claimed that over 7000 schools have been built at a cost of over 39 billion birr. He stated that the schools were built over the past 20 months with money raised from the community. The schools are preschool, junior and highschools. He added they were built across the country. Over 31,252 schools were renovated, the Minister further claimed. However, the number of schools built and maintained are not independently verified.
It is also reported that the Minister unveiled plans to build 17 highschools in the region and their construction will start before Ethiopia’s rainy season which starts in July. Berhanu Nega has been widely criticized for being an “apologist” and “propagandist” of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party government. Berhanu Nega is the leader of Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice Party. Abiy Ahmed appointed him to the cabinet position although he lost in the last Federal election.
