Nothing is as chilling as the plight of Ethiopian college students abducted by so called unknown forces in Ethiopia. They are abducted, raped and God knows what else, because they are Amhara.
What if the person is your daughter, your sister, your cousin? Does it really matter who abducts these girls?
Last week I shared a powerful presentation at Ethiopia’s timid and self-serving parliament by the honorable Dr. Desalegn Damte at which PM Abiy was in attendance. He urged him to stop the carnage on Amhara; alerted the world community the massive economic destruction that now exceeds $60 billion, urged cessation of massacre of innocent civilians using drones, demanded release political prisoners languishing in Ethiopia’s dungeons and more. Does the regime listen to anyone? Desalegn had the courage to speak the truth. I commend him for that.
Worse is the plight of Amhara girls at Dembidolo university where they were abducted. I would not be surprised if authorities in Ethiopia would place blame on someone else instead of asking themselves why they are incapable of defending college students ?
I urge you to express outrage .
Pastor Dagone Moretew is right when he says
“The attacks against these students are part of a broader pattern of ethnic violence that began under the former TPLF regime and has continued under the current administration led by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. Despite being a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, his government has overseen atrocities that are worse than those committed by some of the most brutal regimes in history.
We appeal to all peace-loving communities to condemn these heinous crimes, which are driven by ethnic hatred, particularly against the Amhara people. The false narrative portraying the Amhara ethnic group as beneficiaries of past rulers must be rejected. Historically, the Amhara people have never enjoyed any privileges beyond those available to all Ethiopians.
The silence of religious leaders is heartbreaking. They seem to prefer remaining mouthpieces of criminal aggressors instead of advocating for the victims and the faithful.
We urge the global academic community and human rights organizations to take a stand against this injustice and demand accountability for the ongoing human rights violations in Ethiopia.”
