Toronto – It has been five days since Fano forces declared “operation unity.” It is a coordinated offensive targeting military camps across the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Well over 35 camps were targeted according to sources.

On Sunday, Marshet Tsehayu, spokesperson for Fano forces in Gojjam area, told Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) that Fano forces  “have killed 11 colonels and 5 brigadier generals.” It appears the figure is only for Gojjam.

Encircling “enemy forces” , ambushing and guerrilla tactics were used  in the operation, Marshet added.

Fano’s claim came two days after the defense force reported in published a “breaking news coverage” on its social media page making claims that it has killed more than 300 Fano forces and 125 others were wounded. It also claimed that it has captured 41 Fano fighters from operations in North and South Gondar, North and East Gojjam and North Wollo among others.

The Defense force painted an image that “Operation Unity,” which it linked to Brigadier General Migebe, a TPLF military commander,  was reversed, incurring losses for Fano.  Both General Migebe and Fano denied it.

However, defense force claims and the “breaking news coverage” rather raised ethical questions for using colloquial language in an official government update.

Fano forces narrative is starkly different. Ethio News cited sources from Fano to report that the government forces have suffered crushing defeat in many areas of the region where the “operation unity” was underway.

On Sunday the rebel groups launched attacks near major cities centers in the region like Gondar and Bahir Dar.  The Defense Force did not remark on it.

The war in the region has been underway for more than a year and half. For a long time the government has been announcing that the “operation” would be completed within weeks or months. But this week the Prime Minister hinted – when he was speaking to parliamentarians – that the war could take four or five years. It seems that he was speaking in the context that the rebel groups are not laying arms down and resorting to “peaceful dialogue.” He is insinuating laying down arms as a condition for “peaceful negotiation.”

  1. In terms of casualties and captives the what government army has suffered in Tigray is immense compared to losses in the Amhara region. As the regional power Tigray (TDF)has inflicted heavy casualties on the government army and created good conditions for the Amhara forces. As predicted by the TDF generals the Oromo dominated army is losing in the Amhara region but TDF will defend Oromia which is the gift of Tigray to the Oromo people. The mistakes of Abiy Ahmed are threatening Oromia.
