Toronto – Just two days after meeting Israeli Ambassador to Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, Avraham Neguise, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos flew to Jerusalem on Wednesday where he met with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa’ar.

It is his first visit to the country, at least in his role as Foreign Affairs Minister.

News update from the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Israel indicates that the ministers had a private conversation but they later spoke to the media.  It is said that their discussion focused on strengthening bilateral relations.

Gideon Sa’ar seems to see Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs visit to Tel Aviv part of the Israeli government initiative, which he is leading, to strengthen relations with African countries. It is also indicated by the Israeli Foreign Minister.

Full content of the news update from Israeli Ministry of foreign Affairs reads as follows :

FM Sa’ar meets with Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gedion Timothewos

FM Sa’ar: The Houthis pose a threat to Israel, to Africa and the entire world order.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar today (Wednesday, 12 March 2023) hosted Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Gedion Timothewos on his first visit to Israel.

The two foreign ministers first met privately and then held an expanded bilateral meeting focused on enhancing relations between the two countries in all areas. Foreign Minister Sa’ar announced that he will soon undertake a reciprocal visit to Ethiopia.

Following their meeting, the two made statements to the media.

FM Sa’ar: “Today’s visit is the first visit in the framework of an initiative I am leading to strengthen ties with African countries. Strengthening relations with these countries is one of our strategic goals for 2025, and Ethiopia has a central role in this region.

Terrorism is a common threat to our nations. Ethiopia plays a critical role in the fight against the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab, which threatens the stability of the Horn of Africa. Al-Shabaab collaborates with the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, undermining security and stability in the region.

The Houthis have launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israeli communities and civilians since October 7, disrupting international trade routes and are now threatening to prevent Israeli ships from passing through the Red Sea. They pose a threat to Israel, Africa, and the entire world order.

We are witnessing radical Islamic terrorism in our regions: Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, jihadists in Syria and al-Shabaab in Africa. Terrorism must be eradicated.”

  1. His name is Gedion Timotheos but he is a Pente Evangelical.

I know someone who looks exactly like him. He goes by Mike which is short for Michael. Mike’s family is from Sidama but they grew up in Shewa until he moved to America as a child. Mike then grew up thinking he was Black-American and even got tattoos to prove it. It wasn’t until recently that Mike started to identify as African and now he goes to African clubs instead of the gangsta clubs downtown.

So does that mean Mike is Sidamo, Ethiopian, African or American? If you asked him…. he wouldn’t even know.

  2. These two nations have a lot to learn from each other. They have survived deadly sieges by various sworn enemies. Ethiopia has a lot to offer in terms of natural resources and Israel has the technology and always hungry for raw materials. I hope they will keep upping the ante in this regards. It will be a win-win situation for both.

  3. I think they talked mostly about Eritrea and its recent ties with KSA and/or settling Palestinians in the HOA rather discussions about Al-Shabaab.

  4. The discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology transfer, energy, and infrastructure.
