Arada Hibret _ Addis Ababa

Press Release

Once again, we see troubling political rhetoric from certain primordial politicians asserting ownership of Addis Ababa. Those who advocate for extreme ethnic politics have been crafting a distorted historical narrative to support their unfounded claims over the city. Since the inception of their political movements, these groups have claimed ownership of Addis Ababa, using this false assertion as a tool for propaganda that fosters division among Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic identities.

Since the rise of the Abiy Ahmed administration, this false claim has transcended mere political rhetoric to become a tangible political goal. This agenda is manifesting through damaging policies disguised as “Corridor Development.” Under the exclusive administration of the Mayor and the Prime Minister, this so-called development has already displaced tens of thousands of residents. Moreover, these actions seem aimed at erasing the history, character, and essence of Addis Ababa to create a new identity that aligns with their vision for a transformed city.

Recently, this regime, alongside two other parties claiming to represent the Oromo people, issued a statement reiterating the age-old, baseless claim that Addis Ababa belongs to the Oromos, implying that non-Oromo residents are unwelcome in the city. Such extreme fanaticism may temporarily appease these politicians within their own circles, but it is clear that such claims only deepen the unrest and political turbulence in the region.

Arada Hibret strongly condemns this recent press release and urges these political actors to abandon such absurd claims. The truth is that there is neither historical nor legal justification for granting Addis Ababa to any single ethnic group. Ultimately, Addis Ababa belongs first and foremost to its residents and serves as the capital city of Ethiopia.
