Toronto – In another revealing interview (this time with Anchor Media), former Ethiopian Foreign Minister and President of the Amhara region, Gedu Andargachew, shares insider details about the process that led to Abiy Ahmed’s rise to power.
Abiy Ahmed was selected during a period of chaos within the now-defunct Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) – which he later reorganized into the Prosperity Party. Amid nationwide protests, the EPRDF was rattled by populism, disorder, and parochialism.
Gedu admits he had limited knowledge of Abiy Ahmed’s political personality, as did many Ethiopians, who only became aware of Abiy about two months before he became Prime Minister.
While speculation persists about foreign influence in Abiy’s rise, Gedu focuses on the internal dynamics, revealing strong opposition within the ruling party and concerns that Abiy would “destroy the country.” There were reports in the past indicating that Abiy Ahmed and his family lived in the U.S. in the years before Abiy’s rise to power. He was also reportedly part of the Ethiopian Peace Keeping mission in Rwanda after the genocide.
In this interview, Gedu also explains how Abiy systematically weakened institutions and collective leadership.
