Toronto – Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, on Friday led a delegation to Asmara where he met with Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki. President Isaias met the delegation at the Denden Guest House in the evening.
Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Minister for Information, disclosed that the visit was part of a “periodic forums of bilateral consultation.”
Consolidation of cooperation on a range of issues including on security issues in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea were among the issues discussed during the meeting. Not much is revealed about the modalities of cooperation.
Eritrean News Agency, state owned media, cited Egyptian FM as saying “that the periodic consultations are aimed at cultivating common positions on vital matters of regional security and stability,” according to an updated Yemane shared on his social media page.
Sudan was also part of the discussion. Yemane Geremeskel wrote “the quest for an expeditious and peaceful solution to the conflict in the Sudan; endeavours underway on nation-building in Somalia; as well as challenges of peace and security in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea Regions” were discussed.
The Egyptian PM visit came days after Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia. In October 2024, Egypt, Eritrea and Somalia signed a tripartite agreement with a focus on regional security in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa. At the time, Somalia had a hostile relationship with Ethiopia. The status of the agreement seems to be unchanged. As revealed by Yemane Gebremeskel, Somalia Nation building was discussed as a topic when the Egyptian FM met with Isaias Afeworki in Asmara.
Egypt and Somalia signed a defense pact in August 2024 , the former was poised to send about 10,000 troops to Somalia as part of the African Union mission and a bilateral arrangement with Somalia. Ethiopia saw the deployment of Egyptian troops as a national security threat. While Ethiopia’s relation with Somalia appears to have improved, it is unclear if Egypt is still sending troops to Somalia.
Eritrea has trained tens of thousands of troops for Somalia. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohammed frequently visited Asmara after Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in January 2024 – a development that caused the hostility between Ethiopia and Somalia.

The encirclement is complete. The mighty Egyptian army has just captured the entire southern half of Ethiopia and its jackass beasts of burden from Piccola Roma have captured the northern half of the country. Ethiopia, you are done, toast and good bye. What language you don’t understand? You’re kaput, gone, smithereens!!!
Why didn’t they do their meeting at Mogadishu, or are they no longer welcome?
Does this photo shows a meeting of two African leaders? If you think that is what it shows, you must be on something. These two are 100% of Caucasian race and leaders of 100% Caucasian people. Their countries are the most industrialized and most democratic in the entire area east of the Atlantic Ocean. So stop calling them Africans.
Isaias is forever a sellout to Eritreans and bloodthirsty sycophant to Ethiopians. Over 50 years of his adult life has been wasted in carving out a fiefdom that amounted to nothing more than a ghetto for two generations of Eritreans, and a regional factory for violence and loot.
