Sputnik to engage Amharic speaking audience in Ethiopia

Toronto – Sputnik, the state-owned Russian news agency, launched its editorial center in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Wednesday.
Russian Upper House Speaker, Valentina Matviyenko, who was on an official visit to Ethiopia, attended the opening ceremony alongside Dmitry Kiselev, Director General of Rossiya Segodnya.
Sputnik will produce content in Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language, for radio, websites, social media, and mobile applications, according to reports.
The launch of the editorial center is seen as a significant step in strengthening Russo-African relations. Sputnik quoted Valentina Matviyenko as saying, “We are taking a big step towards strengthening broad Russian-Ethiopian and Russian-African interaction. And, of course, first of all, information interaction, which, I would say, is now crucial for the formation of a truly fair multipolar world order – an order in which the interests of African countries will be fully taken into account.”
During her visit, Matviyenko also met with senior Ethiopian government officials, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Speaking to journalists in Addis Ababa after her meeting with the Prime Minister, she conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian Embassy in Ethiopia shared her remarks: “The leaders of our countries have developed a very open and trusting relationship. The Prime Minister of Ethiopia referred to Vladimir Vladimirovich as the best leader in the world, a brother. He spoke very warmly of him, recalling his visits to Russia and his discussions with our leader.”
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed commented on his social media page, “I was pleased to meet with Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, and her delegation this evening. It was a valuable opportunity to discuss and explore Ethio-Russian relations.”
In addition to her meeting with the Prime Minister, Matviyenko held discussions with Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie, and Tagesse Chafo,the Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (Parliament).
Ethiopia and Russia share a long-standing diplomatic relationship spanning over 125 years. The two nations have signed numerous bilateral agreements, including cooperation in the area of nuclear energy development for power generation.
