Toronto – A deadly conflict is reported in the Somali region, South Eastern Ethiopia, involving the Ogaden and  Isaaq tribes.

According to sources, as many as 100 Issaq tribe members were reportedly killed after the regional administration deployed the region’s special forces to Harshen areas. The incident allegedly occurred in Dacawalay.

Reports on social media allege that Mustafa Mohammed, the region’s president, has been harsh towards the Issaq tribes in the region – an allegation to which the regional administration is yet to respond.

“Inside Africa” has been a vocal advocacy journalism voice on social media for many years now.  It made serious allegations towards Mustafa Mohammed in relation to the incident that is said to have claimed civilian lives.  In fact, there have been views that paint Mustafa Mohammed as a pro-Mogadishu Somali nationalist although his political image in Ethiopia has been entirely different.  Most Ethiopians have viewed his leadership as one that is “matured and progressive.”

“Inside Africa” alleges that “Mustafe Cagjar, the president of Ethiopia’s Somali region, harbors a deep-seated animosity toward the Isaaq communities residing in both the Somali region of Ethiopia and Somaliland. This hostility stems from the pivotal role played by the Isaaq in overthrowing Somalia’s fascist dictator, who belonged to the Darod clan—of which Mustafe Cagjar’s Ogaden clan is a part.”

There appears to be grievances that ethnic Ogaden have control over 80 percent of the region’s resources and power.

On the other hand, the Somali regional government has been making claims that it has been fighting “Al-Shabab terrorists in the region.”

The region was not immediately available to respond at the time of this writing.  Borkena reached out to the Somali region communication office via email. Their view

Ethiopia’s Federal government has not remarked about the development at this writing.
