Toronto – Ethiopian State Media is relentless in its coverage of the achievements of the ruling party, including an urban development project that has displaced hundreds of thousands of residents. The image that emerges from state media narrative is that “Ethiopia is prospering.”
However, the reality on the ground in many parts of the country paints a grim picture.

Stories of famine conditions in North Wollo are shocking, yet they are not making headlines in the mainstream media in the West or Ethiopia, despite reports circulating on social media for several days.

Moges Ambara, deputy head of political affairs for Fano Forces – Rebels – in Wollo, told Anchor Media that the problem spans a wide area in North Wollo, with 16 kebeles in Bugna district particularly affected. He alleged  that “the government has restricted access to humanitarian organizations to the affected areas.”

The region is part of the conflict zone between the Ethiopian government and Fano Forces. Apart from Bugna in Lasta Province, many areas in Waghumra are severely affected.

Video footage aired on Anchor Media’s YouTube channel shows famine-affected children struggling to feed on their mothers’ breasts and highlights the severe impact on women as well.

The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa released a statement in response to the crisis: “The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa is closely following the recent reports of a nutrition crisis in Bugna zone, North Wollo, Amhara region. In support of the people of Ethiopia, our partners are currently surging food nutrition support to the most affected areas. We will continue to follow and assess the situation, and work to ensure the crisis is addressed.”

It appears the OCHA office in Ethiopia has not issued a statement regarding the famine in North Wollo. Borkena has reached out to Eri Kaneko, OCHA Spokesperson at the New York office, to inquire about the situation and any ongoing emergency response.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that at least 21 million Ethiopians face “multi-faceted, often overlapping, humanitarian situations driven by man-made and natural hazards, including conflict, climatic shocks (drought and floods), and disease outbreaks.”

Ethiopia’s Disaster Risk Management Commission has not commented on the famine crisis in North Wollo at the time of writing.

The famine is reportedly caused by drought and conflict in the region. The Federal government launched a large scale military operation in August 2023 which morphed into a full fledged war affecting farming activities and claiming civilian lives.

  1. All the Amhara Genocide, misery, war and destruction are made by Abiy Ahmed. While people are impoverishing, suffering, robbed and dying by Abiy Ahmed he is bent on building himself a Palace.
