Toronto – Ethiopia is vying for membership in the African Union Peace and Security Council. Ethiopia unveiled its candidacy for the position during an event at the Skylight hotel in the capital Addis Ababa, based on the update from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
It appears that Ethiopia has already started campaign to join the council. Gedion Timotheos, Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, was meeting with Ambassadors from African countries based in Addis Ababa.
The ministry unveiled that “The Minister sought the support of AU member states, emphasizing Ethiopia’s long-standing commitment to peace, stability, and unity across the continent.”
Mobilizing multilateral cooperation and advancing a collective voice of the continent with the aim to achieve Agenda 2063 goals is a cause that Ethiopia seems to be advancing.
reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and advancing Africa’s collective voice, particularly in achieving Agenda 2063 goals. The African Union adopted the agenda in 2015. It is a 50 years strategic plan to promote Africa’s development in the political, social, scientific and economic sector – among other things.
During the meeting with diplomats from African countries, Gedion reportedly said promoting “peace and stability” is core to Ethiopia’s foreign policy. He has cited the Pretoria Agreement – which ended the war between Ethiopia’s Federal government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) led Tigray regional state, and the commitment to resolve dispute with Egypt and Sudan on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as examples to demonstrate the commitment for “peace and stability.”
The Minister also highlighted Ethiopia’s experience of peace keeping mission and conflict resolution as points that are relevant for its bid for African Union Peace and Security Council ( AU-PSC ) membership.
AU-PSC is composed of 15 member states. It works to promote peace, security, and stability in Africa.
Egypt has been a member state in the ending AU-PSC membership term. The rest of the members for the ending term were Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, The Gambia, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda.
