Africa faces a myriad of challenges that stem from decades of leadership failures. From unproductive governance and rampant corruption to the abuse of power and outdated political narratives, these issues have deeply affected the continent’s progress. The consequences of these failures are evident in widespread poverty, underdevelopment, and the continued disillusionment of the younger generation.
To address these challenges and secure Africa’s future, the continent must embrace a new era of leadership driven by its youth.
The Root Causes of Leadership Failures
One of the most pressing problems facing Africa is the tendency of leaders to prioritize personal interests over national welfare. This self-serving mentality creates a culture of privilege, divisiveness, and hatred, where leaders focus more on maintaining their wealth and power than on improving the lives of their citizens.
The situation is further aggravated by systemic corruption, tribalism, ethnic conflicts, and the failure to leverage Africa’s abundant resources for development. These factors undermine efforts to build inclusive and prosperous societies.
In many countries, the lack of democratic governance and accountability perpetuates this cycle. Leadership monopolized by select groups stifles innovation, suppresses dissent, and exacerbates economic stagnation. This deeply entrenched political environment leaves citizens frustrated and hopeless.
The Urgent Need for Change
It is clear that Africa cannot continue on its current trajectory. The unsustainable state of leadership threatens the continent’s long-term growth and stability. Leaders must take a hard look at their actions and reform governance to prioritize inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.
Addressing these issues requires moving beyond the outdated political ideologies that have kept Africa lagging behind. By embracing new ideas and fostering a culture of collaboration, leaders can break free from the cycles of stagnation and pave the way for meaningful progress.
Youth as Catalysts for Transformation
As someone who has had the privilege of serving as a Government official and a Politician, I have seen firsthand the power of unity and collective action in bringing about positive change. I have also witnessed the consequences of inaction and complacency, and I am here to reaffirm that without commitment and sacrifice, nothing will change.
It is easy to become comfortable with the status quo, to settle for the way things are and to resist change. But the truth is, if we are not willing to make the necessary changes, if we are not ready to come together and work towards a common goal, then we will continue to be stuck in the same cycle of stagnation and mediocrity.
I speak especially to those of you in the age group of 20-35, the future leaders and decision-makers of our society. If you do not take action now to unite and make a difference, if you do not step up and take responsibility for shaping the future, then you and your children will be condemned to a life of perpetual struggle and hardship.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. You have the power to make a difference, to create a better future for yourselves and for the generations to come. It starts with a decision, a commitment to innovate new ideas and thoughts, to plan and implement change starting from your local village, then moving on to your woreda, your zone, your region, and eventually the nation as a whole.
Yes, it will be a struggle. Yes, there will be obstacles and challenges along the way. But I am confident that with determination and perseverance, you will succeed in achieving your goals and making a lasting impact on society.
So I urge you to take action today. Do not wait for someone else to come and save the day. Be the change you want to see in the world.
A Call to Action: The Time Is Now
To Africa’s youth: the responsibility for shaping the future is in your hands. You must act now to unite, innovate, and lead. Do not wait for others to initiate change—be the pioneers of transformation.
The journey will not be easy, and the challenges will be significant. However, with determination, perseverance, and collaboration, you can overcome these hurdles and create a future defined by justice, prosperity, and opportunity.
Together, We Can Build a Better Future
Africa’s challenges are daunting, but they are not insurmountable. The time has come for a new generation of leaders to step forward and rewrite the continent’s story.
Let us break free from the cycles of despair and mediocrity. By embracing unity and focusing on the greater good, we can achieve lasting change. Together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves, our communities, and the generations that follow.
The power to transform Africa lies within us. Let us rise to the challenge and lead the continent into an era of prosperity, justice, and hope. The time for action is now.

Excellent piece by the brother and valuable advice. In conclusion he writes as follows:
‘Let us break free from the cycles of despair and mediocrity. By embracing unity and focusing on the greater good, we can achieve lasting change. Together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves, our communities, and the generations that follow.’
I second that and it should be said again and again until it settles in all of us. Keep writing brother and stay away from using terms like ‘Oromummaa, Neftegna and Woyane’ as pejoratives to denigrate other groups of people.
Meanwhile, I want to share something that delighted me so much lately. My weekday was wrapped by something that once again made me proud to be a product of the legendary country called Ethiopia and it happened with my most favorite music genre, jazz. One of the greatest jazz artists of these days, Kamasi Washington, paid tribute to his source of pride, Ethiopia, by blending traditional dance varieties from that country with his jazz riff on The Tonight with Jimmy Fallon.
How many times did I tell you the old country that produced us all is the gem of the colored? I have told you that a million times already and I will keep telling that until these bigots and connivers who have been stinking up neighborhoods in Minnesota, Toronto, Tennessee, Michigan, Oslo and Down Under drop unconscious. Here is Washington’s masterpiece from Jimmy Fallon;

The video clip comes with a commercial.
If he comes to your town during his tour, make sure to go out there and soak up his music. For now enjoy this one.
