Toronto – Taye Dendea was reportedly released on Thursday and reunited with his family in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

On Wednesday, reports emerged that he was “kidnapped” as he left Klinto Prison on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. The dominant story in Ethiopian news outlets on Wednesday was that he was “abducted” by “individuals wearing facemasks.”

BBC Amharic reported on Thursday, citing Taye Dendea’s spouse, that he had been released. She explained that he was detained by security forces shortly after being released on a 20,000 birr bail in accordance with a court ruling.

Previously, Taye’s spouse told BBC Amharic that he was taken by security and Federal Police to an unknown location.

According to the source, he was released on Thursday from the Federal Police Crime Investigation Office in the Mexico area of Addis Ababa.

Taye was initially arrested in December 2023, just days after being removed from his position as State Minister of Peace. His dismissal came after he openly criticized Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, describing him as a “ruthless man who likes to play with the blood of innocents.”

  1. Thank Almighty he is safe for his loved ones who were left agonized by his arrest right after he was released on bail. Now, leave this man alone.

    • Brother Ittu, Nope

This academically smart guy never understand the political ground in Ethiopia. He is always FEYEL WEDEH KEZEMZEM WEDEYA. He is still asking freedom for Oromia region while Oromia is not only free but also making history in Ethiopia in so many ways, so i don’t understand such people. Even the actual Oromia freedom fighters are now coming home since they understand Oromia is already free and leading Ethiopia to prosperity across the board, and also the current government is too strong for fragile neighborhood fighters across the country. One thing I recently learned, people like him once a society identified them as a hero for their little contribution against TPLF, they always wanted to be treated like a hero just for being there. I suggest putting all people like him in jail for the next 5 or 10 years and release them once Ethiopia is in a good shape across the board then they have nothing to complain about. He was appointed under the current government but he was getting his news from Youtubers while he was part of the government. He needs Aradumaaa, (Yarada lij) because yarada lij eyebela naw meyaleksew…..

      • Brother Teddy,

I was talking from his loved ones’ standpoint. I feel sorry for his family. He is a grownup adult and well educated man. He knows what he is getting into. What aches me most is what is going on both in Amhara and Oromia regions. Bigots and connivers are having field days in those regions. It saddens me to my core knowing innocent civilians are being killed and properties destroyed. The gullible youth is being used as cannon fodder in senseless war. I sometimes feel hopeless about it but I never gave up praying that someone everyone involved in the senseless and stupid conflict will come to their senses. What some of us here among our Diaspora are doing is careless and repugnant. Amharas are not invading Oromia as some among us are telling us. Oromos are not invading Amhara as some PhD’s are trying to make us believe. What unfortunate groups of people!!!

Above all what worries me most is if the central government falls apart amid such chaotic environment where there is no viable group among the opposition to pick up the mantle. That is my nightmare.
