Berhanu Nega says “The government does not have oromummaa agenda”

Toronto – Berhanu Nega, who taught Economics at Bucknell University in the United States, was a leader of a political organization that aimed to topple the TPLF-led government in a combined peaceful and armed struggle.

Now he is painting a different image of the government in power in Ethiopia – which many Ethiopians think is worse than the TPLF government in a number of ways.

In a two part interview with Lualawi media (part I is shared below), he expressed his views that he can not see Abiy Ahmed’s government the way critics and other politicians see it. The reason is he thinks that he “has access to information” and exposure to the “debates” from within the government. He is currently serving as Minister for Education – a role he said he chose for himself when the Abiy government offered a few cabinet positions for the government.

Berhanu went further to make claims that Abiy Ahmed’s government is not standing for “Oromummaa.”   He paints the government as one that is undertaking an incremental reform process and was under attack from three forces including from radical ethnic Oromo nationalists.

He is currently leading the Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice Party (EZEMA). Hundreds of members of the party – including a significant number of leadership – left the party after the leader, Berhanu Nega, steered the party in a different direction to the point of diminishing its status as an opposition political party.

Over the past six years tens of thousands of Ethiopians – mostly ethnic Amharas – have been massacred by what many Ethiopains think is a coordinated attack between officials in Abiy Ahmed’s government and the militant ethnic Oromo Nationalist group.  Berhanu Nega tends to see all the massacres rather as something that is part of a transition process and event likened it to the era of the Ethiopian revolution.

Take a listen to part one of his interview below and share your remarks in the comment section.
