Toronto – News of continued drone attacks reported in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The latest one was in the Motta area of Gojjam.
According to Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) and other local news sources, at least five civilians are killed in Motta. The Defense Force reportedly targeted a school and the strike took place around Tuesday 10:00 a.m. local time.
In a separate incident, another strike took place in Dega Damot, Feresbet town. It occurred around 12:15 P.M. A four years old boy is reportedly killed in the incident. Multiple local sources have confirmed it.
In another shocking development, a mother of two was reportedly shot dead after government forces fired DSHk in North Shoa zone of Amhara region, Asakirt district. This particular incident took place on October 11. The victim was reportedly heading home with her toddler when she was shot dead. The toddler was reportedly rescued by Fano forces on the same day.
According to EMS news, the victim is identified as Asbera Mohammed Nur. A picture purportedly showing the woman laying on the ground soaked in blood is circulating on social media. It is too graphic to share.
Government forces are resorting to attacking civilians as what it calls “final military operation” in the Amhara is failing to achieve its objective.
As the infantry operation continues to fail, the Defense force is increasingly resorting to drone strike and even fighter helicopters. Apart from Gojjam, there have been confirmed drone strikes in many areas in South Gondar over the past few days. However, the extent of casualties is unspecified.
Fano forces are vowing the drone strike in the region could not reverse the defeat the government forces are suffering. “It will make many in the region to join Fano forces,” they say.
What the Ethiopian government started as “a few weeks of military operation” in the Amhara region in August 2023 is not over after a year and half. The intention was to disarm Fano forces. Evidently, the operation proved to have the unintended consequence of arming and strengthening Fano forces. From video footage regularly circulating on social media, Fano forces are more armed than they were a year ago.
The rebels enjoy massive grassroot support in the region and the drone attacks are meant to be intimidating the population that is supporting Fano.
The Ethiopian government did not remark on reported drone strikes in the past two weeks.
