Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday said the European Union expressed commitment  to “continue its support for the fight against terrorism in the region.”

Rita Laranjinha, Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service, is on a visit to Ethiopia. She met with the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mesganu Arega.

She is cited as saying “the EU recognizes the significant role Ethiopia is playing in peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. She stated that the European Union is committed to its relations with Ethiopia and assured that it will continue its support for the fight against terrorism in the region.”

The ministry also said that  Mrs. Rita remarked about the Ethiopian economy. She seems to be replicating the narrative about “fastest economic growth” amid growing economic despair and hardship in the country as many families are struggling to feed their families.

Rita stated, as cited in the Ministry news update, “the European Union appreciates the fast economic growth that Ethiopia is showing and that the EU will work to further strengthen the link between companies in the EU member states and the Ethiopian business community.”

Misganu made a case for the “economic reform” – which the ruling party calls “homegrown.” He painted it as a measure that  “created a favourable environment for trade and investment and called on companies from EU member states to participate in Ethiopia’s key investment opportunities.”

A new ministry of foreign affairs is not yet appointed after Taye Askeselassie was removed from the position last week and appointed as President, replacing Ethiopia’s first Woman President, Sahle-Work Zewde.

  1. How can this lady demand that the Ethiopian government should fight terrorism in the region. Th Ethiopian government itself is a terrorist and a fascist government that wages wars against its own people, its culture and history. The war it is waging against the Amhara people is a clear testimony that the so-called Ethiopian government doesn’t represent the Ethiopian people. On the other side when the EU representative presents such a demand to the foreign minister of Ethiopia, she actually supports the genocidal act of the Abiy regime. In general, the lady doesn´t have a clear picture about the so-called terrorism that exists in many parts of Africa, in the Sahel region, and in Somalia, and in certain parts of Cameron and Nigeria. All these terrorists are the products of undemocratic governments in their respective countries. Some also are the products of foreign forces that are waging wars against terrorism, but in actual fact aggravating the situations. For example, after France sends its troops to the Sahel region instead of easing the situations, the situations become more worse than before. Frances’s main aim is not to fight terrorism, but to create unstable situations so that it can exploit the resources of the region, like Uranium and Gold. All in all, the economic policies of the EU and its relationships with undemocratic regimes in some parts of Africa complicates the political and military situations in these countries. Because of the direct and indirect interventions of the West over the last 65 years the various governments of the continent could not build democratic institutions that could manage their societies according to certain democratic principles, and control their own resources in order to create national wealth in each country. When there exists a kind of division of labor in each African country, and when the economy in each country is being supported by manufacturing, and when various African governments have a clear picture how they could build a nation-state, then they create a political atmosphere that supports creativity and innovation. Unfortunately, the EU and America prevent the development of a healthy and peaceful atmosphere so-that the continent remains unstable. Their paternalistic approach violates against true democratic values that were developed by enlightened thinkers like Kant, Hegel and other well cultivated individuals that paved the way for Western civilization.
Dr. Fekadu Bekele is a development economist, and writes articles on various issues that promote democratic and peaceful values.
