Toronto – Fano Geta Asrade, head of the political division of Amhara Fano Popular Organization, which is one of the Fano forces operating in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, elucidated on the current stature and goals of Fano.

In a highly rated interview with Anchor Media, which was published on Saturday, he elaborated the differences within the Fano forces while expressing optimism that all the forces will come under a unified structure. Work is underway towards it, according to Geta.

In the course of the interview he emphasized that the goal of the Fano movement is to reverse the existential threat that Amhara people have been facing for decades. In that regard, he highlighted the anti-Amhara narratives that have been persisting for decades, the administrative-structural and legal supports for it. He noted that Amhara people  have been exposed to attack in all parts of the country.

He asserts that “one of the successes of the Amhara Fano  movement over the past one and half years is to expose  the hidden anti-Amhara agenda  of the ruling Prosperity Party under the leadership of Abiy Ahmed.” He made a reference to extensive killings of civilians in the Amhara region. He said the ongoing war against Amhara is worse than one that was attempted in history.

In terms of support from a third party – state or non-state actors – , Geta Asrade emphasized that Fano does not collaborate with or accept assistance from any external forces, and does not plot against Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government, including the defense chief of staff,  has been alleging that Fano forces are working for “external enemies.”

Geta Asrade also highlighted military success that Fano has been attaining in less than two years making a reference to how the Fano grew to be one of the huge military forces in the country and in the region.

Another key point he made, as was the case with other Fano leaders, is that the movement is not against ethnic groups. It is a movement to reverse existential threat and that it seeks to work with all Ethiopians.

  1. I had listened A/P interview with Messay and disagreed with some of his accusations against Fano leadership. It’s not short of disinforming the public on very critical political issue. Geta Asirade was creating his on version and print it against the other Fano leadership.
So I would be very glad if Borkena could post my view as usual. Thank you very much for the help!
