Toronto – Fano forces, Ethiopian rebels operating in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, this week captured a senior military commander who was commanding government soldiers in the battle in and around Sekela.
News of the battle gains in Sekela was released a few days ago but the Fano forces did not release information about the commander they captured.
The commander is identified as Lieutenant Colonel Yared. According to sources, he was arrested in connection with the war between the Federal government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). He was arrested in Hawassa. It was after his release that he was redeployed, and this time against Fano Forces in the Amhara region.
According to sources who claim to have credible information, Colonel Yared has served in the Ethiopian Defense force for several decades. He took part during the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea more than 20 years ago. He has also served as a member of a peacekeeping mission in Liberia, according to Zara media.
Earlier this week, Fano forces claimed a major victory in many areas of the Amhara region including in Sekela where the commander was captured. Fano forces claimed that they have captured more than 40 government soldiers. Dozens of government soldiers are also killed and wounded. On the side of Fano about two deaths and four wounds were reported.
Furthermore, the Fano forces claimed that they have captured multiple group armaments including Dshk and Bren Machine guns, and hundreds of light weapons. Fano forces also seized more than 30 million Ethiopian Birr from the Defense Force. It is unclear whether the money was meant to be a salary for the forces.
A radio communication device that was in use during the operation was also captured by Fano forces. When the image of it was shared on social media, the Prime Minister’s advisor on social media, Daniel Kibret, made claims on social media that the image circulating on social media was photoshopped. The Fano’s responded by releasing video footage of it and two days later they released a video of the captured military commander.
In a video footage purportedly showing the captured Let. Colonel Yared, he was asked by one of his captors as to what he learned from the operation that led to his capture. He said ” We have learned that the Fano movement is backed by the people…”
The colonel is also seen in the video hailed the manner in which he is handled after he was captured.
Fano forces pledge that they will release the colonel and facilitate for him to reunite with his family in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian government has not remarked about the capture of colonel Yared. Meanwhile, the government is making similar claims of victory against Fano forces in Gojjam. Government media armies claim that major Fano leaders in the Amhara regions were killed. Fano’s response is that it is “propaganda.”

Fanos claim one victory after another almost daily in and lately even outside Amhara region and that has been going on for almost 3 years. On the other hand the government has been declaring victory over Fano fighters for years and telling everyone that Fano would be wiped out before the end of every year since 2022. So, who would you believe? If I was a referee in this ‘boxing’ bout, I would stop the fight after Fano is knocked down 3 times and I could have stopped the fight after the government forces knocked down 3 times and after the tenth count! Ten count and you’re out!!!
But there is one reality I, very sadly, believe. The youth in that country is being used as cannon fodder by bigots, connivers and despots in their demonic scheme what ever it may. I can hear their mothers wailing and that leaves my heart aching. I can see their fathers seething with anger noting their sons are being rushed into awaiting inferno for much ado about nothing and I share their raging anger. But what can they do? But what peace mongers like me can do about it when bigots, connivers and despots are having their heydays? All I can do is fall down on my high mileage knees and pray for divine intervention. The youth, the future of that country, is being slaughtered on daily basis. Woe, woe, woe!!!
Dear Mr Ittu Aba Farda ,
Please don’t make it into a hilarious scenario. People are dying on both sides, even if some are driven by ego to climb the ladder and others to keep a tight grip on political power. There are innocent people dying for as cannon fodder as you describe it to help others climb up the ladder.
Fanno and prosperity party leaders are genociders . STOP killing innocent Amhara civilians and rest of ethnic groups.
