Abyssinia and Tseday Bank impacted in a reported robbery in the Amhara region of Ethiopia

Toronto – Abyssinia and Tseday Banks report that over 67 million birr was robbed by “Unidentified gunmen” in South Wollo near Geshen Amba branches.
VOA Amharic reported that the branch managers of the two banks on Friday gave a joint press statement in Dessie. However, officials from head offices of the banks did not remark about the incident.
Zewdu Kenaw, head of Gishen Debre Kerbe branch of Abyssinia Bank, told VOA Amharic that the incident happened on Meskerem 25, 2017 ( October 5, 2024) between 5:30 p.m. and midnight.
Gishen Debre Kerbe attracts millions of Ethiopian Orthodox Church pilgrims every year. This year, the Fano forces were given credit for the peaceful celebration of the holiday on Oct 1, according to local sources.
“It was around 11:30 [5:30 local time] and we were working after hours. Gunmen came to our office and told me not to speak or move. I was told to open the safe and I said no. I was hit by a gun butt and they grabbed my hand , and took the key from my pocket but they were unable to open the safe. I told them it is a combination lock. Then they got the cashier, brought him and took the key from him. opened the box. I told them it is a public resource, ‘do not take it.’ They took all the money,” Zewdu Kenaw told VOA Amharic.
Over 63 million birr was taken from Abyssinia Bank.
Amare Mamo, head of Tseday Bank Branch at Gishen Debre Kerbe, said “They were wearing masks and ‘shirit’. They did not want to show their faces.” The gunmen took over four million from his branch, according to the report.
Komos Aba Leykun Wondifraw, head of South Wollo Dioceses Ethiopian Orthodox Church has condemned the robbery, according to VOA Amharic. The Branches were opened at Gishen Debre Kerbe, one of the sacred sites of the church, with request from the Orthodox Church to serve pilgrims and laity.
The identities of the gunmen are unspecified and the government did not remark on the incident.
The incident apparently came after Fano forces in Sekela, Gojjam, reported that they seized over 31 million birr from government forces as they were fleeing following a battle loss.
