Toronto – It has been over a week now since the Ethiopian government declared what it called “final” military operation in the Amhara region of Ethiopia against Fano forces.

And it is claiming that it has achieved significant military gains in Gojjam – a claim that is at a stark difference from the Fano Forces.

In a statement the Defense force shared on its social media page this week, it said it has eliminated “63 members of the extremist group,” in its campaign in East Gojjam , Motta area. It also said that it has seized firearms.  Furthermore, it said that it has killed leaders like “Bamlaku Sew Mehon, Elias, Tafere Wallegne, Shimeles Tadesse, Liksew Anber and Melkamu Yibeltal.”

Fano forces in Gojjam did not remark about government claims. However, the picture that emerges from their narrative about the response to the government all out war and its result is different. Asres Mare, head of the political division of Fano forces in Gondar, says that fanos have won several battles. He used a metaphor to describe the failure of the government military campaign : “the woman who went to hairdressing came back shaved.”

While speaking in an optimist tone about the inevitability of victory, he speaks against complacency on battle gains as the goal is not just to win battles but something of higher purpose.

As an example of the battle gains, they talked about the battle in Sekela, a town that is in a range of about 30 kilometers to the regional capital Bahir Dar. According to him, over 40 government soldiers were captured. Dozens killed and hundreds of firearms were seized. Also, Fano forces seized over 30 million birr from government soldiers and a military radio communication device.

Apart from attacking government soldiers’ camps, Fano forces are now attacking military training camps. This week, they attacked Bersheleko Training camp in Gojjam. Fanos claims they have inflicted a heavy blow to the training facility. Trainees are reportedly dispersed.

When the government declared a “final” campaign deploying more than 40,000 additional forces in the region, Fano forces across the Amhara region imposed road closure as part of their military strategy to respond to the operation.  At the time of this writing, the restriction is partially lifted in parts of the Amhara region like in North Wollo.

Fano leaders from other parts of the Amhara region are saying that the government’s “final campaign” is failing. Shalke Habte Wolde, a Fano leader from Gondar, told Anchor media that “the government campaign is failing.”  He added ” we have created a generation that is capable of not only annihilating the enemy but also burying it. The struggle will never stop.”
