Toronto – 4.9 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers reportedly hit Ethiopia. It occurred in Awash Fentale area – which is about 165 kilometers south east of Addis Ababa. Government Communication Services has confirmed it in a social media update.

The earthquake occurred on Sunday around 9 P.M. local time.

The shock was felt in the capital Addis Ababa, Metehara to the south east  and Kombolcha (near Dessie) in the North.

“Volcano Discovery”  reported 10 major earthquakes around the world over the past 24 hours including in Canada and the United States. The one experienced in Ethiopia was included in the list.

The source indicated the latitudinal and longitudinal location of the epicenter as ” 9.1287°N / 40.3209°E Harari, Ethiopia”

“Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc,” The source said.

Unlike the report from Ethiopian government communication services, the report from ‘Volcano Discovery” said that the incident occured in Harari about 41 km northwest of Gelemso, Oromiya. For this source, it occurred around 8:10 P.M. Addis Ababa time.

As well, “Volcano Discovery” described the earthshakes felt in nearby areas as “moderate”

Ethiopian government communication services cited reports as saying that there had been minor earth shocks over the past few days. They anticipate no circumstance worse than this.

Ethiopia had been experiencing severe unprecedented landslides in different parts of the country over the past few months that claimed over 300 lives.

  1. I have expressed my worries for decades about possible major earthquake hitting any location of that country including the metropolitan capital. The fault line is not too far from Eritrea, Djibouti and Ethiopia. If this was centered in and just outside the capital, it could have been a calamity. I remember what one of my friends who was born and raised in the capital told me and how the late emperor’s administration had the possibility of a major earthquake in mind. It had strict rules in the construction of high rise buildings. He told me how those rules were compromised since then. I don’t think anyone in charge of issuing construction permits in the administration has any clues or concern about it. May The Almighty Save Those Upright People!!!
