Toronto – Irreechaa – an ethnic Oromo religious ritual festival – was celebrated in the capital Addis Ababa and Debre Zeit (Bishoftu).

Majority of residents of Addis Ababa are neither ethnic Oromo not the follower Waqe Fana – a traditional ethnic Oromo religion. But the event that seems to be organized by the government has attracted millions of people.

The government mobilized over 2800 busses to transport ethnic Oromos from different towns in Oromia to the places of celebration in Bishoftu and Addis Ababa. The Federal Ministry of Transportation and Addis Ababa City Transport Division coordinated it.

Critics tend to see that the celebration in Addis Ababa is a political project, one that is part of Oromazing Addis Ababa.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has conveyed a message for the event describing it as “reconciliation.” The Prime Minister is a follower of Prosperity Gospel, according to some sources.

Federal government ministries and politicians have expressed best wishes for the Holiday.

Those who espouse the ritual holiday describe it as a “thanks giving day” and is relevant for the whole of mankind. However, for Christians and Muslims in the country the ritual holiday is for the Waqe Fena animist religion.
