Ethiopia : Orthodox Priest, Whole family slain in Oromia region

Toronto – Melake Mewie Kesis Wolde Eyesus Ayalew, an Orthodox Priest, along with his wife and three children is slaughtered to death in East Shoa diocese in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. He served the church for more than 41 years. 

He was killed in Mojo district. Perpetrators of the attack are yet to be identified, according to a report by Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Media. 

The source called the circumstances of his killing as “shocking” and horrifying.  The government has not yet remarked about the latest tragic incident in the Oromia region involving the killings of Orthodox Church priest.

One of his sons,  Melake Wolde Eyesus, was also a deacon and walking the path to priesthood. 

The district diocese has confirmed the incident.  Pre-burial prayer took place in Kidist Selassie church in Mojo in the presence of Archbishop Abune Gorgorios.

There have been recurring incidents of attacking the Ethiopian Orthodox Church followers and priests, burning churches in the Oromia region of Ethiopia for more than six years now.

  1. The slaughter of Orthodox Church priests, clergy members, church members, and unarmed innocent civilians in the Oromia region must stop. The same goes for Amhara, Tigray, and all of Ethiopia’s regions. No one should be targeted for heinous atrocities because of their ethnic or political identity.
    Killing civilians and attacking religious leaders will not raise the diseased person from the grave or cure the emotional scar, but will instead foster a false sensation and hallucinated satisfaction from vigilantism.
    Abiy Ahmed and armed groups operating in Oromia must stop killing religious leaders and innocent civilians in Ethiopia.
