Ethiopian Transport Employers Federation seeks 300 million birr unsettled payment

Toronto – Ethiopian Transport Employers Federation is threatening to sue the Ethiopian government over unpaid 300 million birr for transportation service during the conflict in Northern Ethiopia.
“We have provided the support that is expected from us but it should not be the case that we cover all the expenses,” DW Amharic cited Berhane Zeru, president of the Federation as saying.
The 200 million birr is requested for freight service during the conflict and the remaining 100 million is transporting people, the source added.
The service was provided after the Federation signed an agreement with the Defense Force. DW cited Berhane as saying that some payment was completed based on the agreement but there is still outstanding 300 million birr.
The Federation is organized under the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services but the Ministry’s role was that of coordinating whenever the service was needed, it was said. The service was provided under national emergency context.
The war between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Defense force ended in November 2022 following the Pretoria Cessation of Hostility Agreement. The outstanding payment has not been paid for the past two years.
“We have a great respect for the Defense Institution…however it is not appropriate that we cover all the expenses,” the president added.

Additional 500 passenger buses were also used. According to DW Amharic, the Federation had to call a convention with members following a pressure from members to get their payment.
The decision from the Federation for the defense force to settle the payment or else it will have to take measures including suing.
According to DW Amharic, the Ministry of Transport was not immediately available for a remark.
