Toronto – The signs that the Ethiopian education system has been a disaster do not seem to go away. The result of this year’s grade 12 students seems to clearly attest that.
Berhanu Nega, Minister for Education ( and also leader of the opposition Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice party) on Thursday officially announced the result in a press conference with local journalists in the capital Addis Ababa.
A total of 674,823 students wrote the grade 12 exam but only 5.4 percent scored 50 percent and above. Eight percent of the students (29,736) took the online exam which was offered for the first time in the country.
According to a disclosure from the Ministry, those who scored the highest in the exams are from the Natural Science stream. Only 1,221 students scored high – that is much lower than one percent of the total number of students who wrote the exam.
353, 287 students wrote exams in the social science stream but only 2 percent scored a passing grade of 50 percent and above.
1,363 schools were reported to be unsuccessful in that even a single student did not pass the exam. There are about 3,792 high schools across the country, according to sources.
Addis Ababa City Administration, Harari and Oromia region have passed “better number of students,” according to Berhanu Nega.
The exam has been given in public universities for three years now in an effort to curb cheating during exams.
Over four million students are outside of school in the Amhara region of Ethiopia for a consecutive two years now due to the ongoing war in the region. Abiy Ahmed’s government declared war in the region in August 2023 under the stated objective of “disarming Fano forces.” There are also areas that have been experiencing war in the Oromia region of Ethiopia.

The disastrous result announced by the ministry is a scandal that falls on the responsibility of the poor educational system in the ministry of education .
With my experience as an education officer ,I have never heard or encountered such a farce result which is an insult to the ministry.
The problem is either there was no education or the teachers are not qualified or unfit to teach.
So it is time that the so called education officials in the ministry take appropriate measures to put back in track their deviation from the right course.
I hope this would be the last time they announce such results.
Another miserable failure. The pile of shit from this government and leadership keeps growing. Its smell stinks from end to end like a dead corpse. Berhanu is a prostitute who doesn’t give a flying fuck about the Ethiopian youth and gladly bends over for Mr. Ahmed for the scraps that is thrown his way. He used to be a freedom fighter, the irony! Ethiopians deserve to be screwed over and over by these narcissistic myopic gas bags if they choose to stay silent and take it in their behind like a good female dog.
“”The teachers are not qualified or unfit to teach.”” That is one of the principal reasons behind this disaster.
The current Ethiopian Ministry of Education’s bad educational system is taking a great toll on exam performance.
However, students should not be permitted to bring cellphones into class.
