Toronto – Fano forces are reportedly  besieging Woldia city – which is located about 520 kilometers North of East of the capital Addis Ababa – from multiple locations.

Ethiopia Media Service (EMS) on Saturday cited Tsehayu Negash who is described as coordinator of Amhara Fano forces in Wollo as saying that Fano forces have encircled Woldia from Awura Godana, Tikur Wuha and Doro Gibir directions.

There are two leading fano forces in Wollo under Colonel Fentahun Muhaba and under Mihret Wodajo. The operations to besiege Woldia is said to be a joint one, according to an EMS report.

Government Forces have reportedly responded by firing heavy artillery. Five farmers were reportedly killed, according to Tsehahu Negash..

Further North West, Fano forces in Gondar have reportedly controlled several towns in South Gondar including Este, Semada, Gaynt and Tache Gayet.

These towns came under fano forces following an intense battle on Friday and Saturday, according to the source. They were under the leadership of Fano Baye Tena.

Ashenafi Wondossen, spokesperson for Fano in the region, alleged that government forces robbed financial institutions when they withdrew from the towns.

The Defense Force has not responded to the allegations nor remarked about losing those towns to Fano forces.

In Metema, there has been a reported intense fighting between government forces and fano forces. The Fano forces took control of Metema Yohannes, a town along the Ethio-Sudan border, on Monday this week. They withdrew from it after two days without any conflict and held strategic positions outside of the town.

According to EMS, Ethiopian defense forces were unable to control the area including Metema although they fought against Fanos for days. It is reported that the defense force retreated to Genda Wuha in North Gondar after bitter battle losses.

According to spokesperson Ashenafi Defense forces unleashed extrajudicial killings against civilians as they were retreating to Gendewuha. The number of civilians killed in extrajudicial killings is unspecified.

Human rights organizations have not yet reported about the latest extrajudicial killings of civilians in North Gondar.
