Toronto – Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed is in China to attend the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). He traveled to China a day after hosting Bill Gates who is reportedly “supporting Ethiopian agriculture.”
Abiy Ahmed was received by Chinese president President Xi Jinping.
“Thank you, President Xi Jinping, for the warm welcome and our valuable discussions today. Ethiopia greatly appreciates China’s continued and multifaceted support. Despite facing various challenges, we are making significant strides in agriculture, manufacturing, industry, tourism, telecommunications, and other sectors,” Abiy Ahmed wrote on his social media page.
China has a strong economic presence in Ethiopia and has been primarily engaged in the infrastructure development and manufacturing sector. Culturally, the Chinese language is now offered at Addis Ababa University.
Abiy Ahmed was accompanied by his cabinet ministers on his trip to China. Initially it appeared as if he canceled attending the forum as he was rather focused on Bill Gates’ visit to Ethiopia.
Abiy also disclosed that he met with Sudanese leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on the sidelines of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation. “Our discussions focused on a range of bilateral and regional issues of mutual concern,” Abiy said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on Wednesday disclosed that Taye Atske Selassie, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MFAE), on Wednesday took part at the Ninth Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing.
“The conference reviewed and successfully completed all preparatory work for the summit, adopting the draft agenda and outcome documents,” said the MFAE.
