Shimels Hussien Mohammed

Dr. Shimels Hussien Mohammed is a public health nutritionist and epidemiologist with over 12 years of experience in research, teaching, and managing health and nutrition programs. He holds a PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology  from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (Iran), an MSc in Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), and an MPH from the University of Gondar and a BSc in Health Officer from Haramaya University. He has published various peer-reviewed articles in academic journals and contributed book chapters to  academic textbooks on nutritional epidemiology, research methodology and public health nutrition.

Currently, Dr. Shimels serves as a Public Health Faculty at St. Paul Hospital’s Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa. Prior to his academic role, he worked for 8 years with the United Nations (UN), Center for Disease Control (CDC), Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), and Afar Region Health Bureau. He is currently a scientific advisor in various professional platforms, including being a key  scientific contributor currently to the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Shimels is an avid self-learner and reader, acquiring expertise in various subjects of social relevance. His reading interests span psychology, philosophy, science, biography, history, and politics. He actively engages in social and scientific critique, participating in in-depth intellectual discussions. Dr. Shimels is the founder and chairperson of SED, a monthly book and science discussion group of selected intellectuals in Addis Ababa. He prolifically writes in both Amharic and English, covering themes related to societal morality, ethics, politics, social psychology, world affairs, and public health. His op-eds and commentaries have appeared in various electronic and paper-based magazines and newspapers, sometimes using a pen name for security reasons.

Dr. Shimels’s passion for curiosity and exploration led him to travel extensively during his 20s and early 30s. He gained insights into Ethiopia at all levels, including kebele level, and explored almost all continents of the world. He firmly believes that travel, exposure to diverse cultures, and reading have a more profound impact on shaping individuals’ views, values, and philosophy than even attending the best universities. Embracing a minimalist lifestyle, he adheres to the philosophy that “less is more” and simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Dr. Shimels avoids routine, impactless, and menial platforms and engagements, striving for excellence in his professional practices and integrity.
