Toronto – The security situation in South West Shoa area of Ethiopia is worsening as fighting continues between government forces and the radical ethnic Oromo nationalist – Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).

According to DW Amharic news report, civilians in the zone ( which is located in the Oromia region of Ethiopia) are severely impacted.

The source said it has received information from residents that at least 17 civilians had been killed in the area – particularly Kersa Malima, Seden Sodo, Tole and Ameya districts – since the beginning of August.

Nono district in west Shoa is also impacted, according to DW Amharic report. It said residents who spoke on condition of anonymity said people are dying everyday. A resident from the area said “It is not one or two. They wait and kill one another. Government forces are seen attempting to enforce law in the area but it can not cover all areas. Recently three shepherds were killed in a horrifying manner. It was also recently that 12 people were killed together…”

Residents  remarked, according to the source,  that the sufferings they have been going through due to the war between the OLA and government forces is “unprecedented” in the history of the community in the area.

“Before two – three months, relative peace has been observed. Since conflict resurge in the last one month people are dying. Especially those who are dying most are innocent civilians who do not have a role in the conflict,” resident are quoted as saying.

Apart from the killings, properties are destroyed.  Cattle are looted. Ransom kidnappings are also common. Rape is another tragedy. Both government forces and rebels are linked to incidents of rape. These factors have combined to cause instability in the area – negatively impacting economic activity too.

On top of that government forces and the OLA fighters depend on communities in the area for food supply which has contributed to the impoverishment in the area, according to the source.

  1. The hoodlums now roaming aimlessly in Western Wallagaa are said to be busy to create a safe and open corridor leading to Somalia. They are killing and looting villages located outside Oromia just for this purpose. They are wreaking havoc in villages even inside Kenya. This should be closely monitored.
Okay bigots in Minnesota, Toronto, Tennessee, Michigan, Oslo and Down Under! Are you going to join your bosom buddies there and help them in creating the corridor?
