Toronto – Somalia Federal Government Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) on Wednesday announced that Ethiopian Airlines has until August 23 to “resolve” what it calls “violation of Somali sovereignty.”

SCAA also accused Fly Dubai Airline on similar matters and threatened that the authority will revoke the airlines license to operate in the country immediately if the alleged “violation of sovereignty,” is not addressed.

On August 21 Somalia’s aviation authority released an “urgent letter” entitled “Resolution of Required for Sovereignty Violation.”

The letter addressed to Ethiopian Airlines, which is circulating on social media, noted that there was “correspondence” with Ethiopian Airlines on the same issue and the latest was on August 14.

Past communication was, the letter said, “regarding violation of Somali sovereignty related to destinations served by Ethiopian Airlines.”  The accusation against  Fly Dubai Airlines details a similar issue.

SCAA alleges “It has come to our attention that, instead of addressing the sovereignty issues outlined in our letter [apparently from past communication ], Ethiopian Airlines has made adjustments to its flight operations by removing references to Somalia destinations and retaining only Airport codes. This action exacerbates the original concerns and undermines the sovereignty of Somalia…”

It also made allegations that it has received “an increasing number of unacceptable complaints” from the Somali public.

In reference to the action it is taking against Ethiopian Airlines, Somalia government stated “We must emphasize that if these issues are not resolved by 23rd August 2024, the SCAA will have no choice but to suspend all Ethiopian Airlines Flights to Somalia, effective from that date.”

At this writing, the Ethiopian Airlines has not remarked on the Somalia’s Federal Government allegations of violations at this writing.

After Ethiopia and Somaliand signed a memorandum of understanding on access to the sea, Somalia took action against Ethiopian Airlines on January 17, 2024. It denied Ethiopian Airlines plane – which was en route to Hargeisa – airspace.

Last month, Eritrea announced that it has suspended Ethiopian Airlines – in a two line letter addressed to the Airline – as of September for unspecified reason but a separate letter released to travelers allege that Ethiopian airlines has become unresponsive to “missing luggages.”  Despite a good start in 2018, Eritrean government relation with Abiy Ahmed’s Administration has soured although the diplomatic tie is not completely ended.

Somalia’s action against Ethiopia seems to be politically motivated in connection with agreement signed with Somaliland – a breakaway region of Somalia that existed as de facto state for over 33 years. Turkey initiated an indirect talk in Ankara between the two countries after their relations deteriorated due to the MoU signed with Somalialand but Somalia announced this week that it will no longer take part in the talk alleging that Ethiopia is not accepting its sovereignty. Somalia demands that Ethiopia revokes the MoU with Somaliland signed on January 1, 2024.

After its relation with Ethiopia, Somalia has multiple talks with Eritrea at the level of heads of state in Asmara and reached agreement in several areas including defense. Eritrea has trained thousands of Somalian troops.

There have been recurring attempts to trainish the image of Ethiopian Airlines and the latest one came in the form of an ethnic Somali traveler who alleged that she was taken out of the plane at Addis Ababa Airport. Ethiopian Airlines narrative is different and was linked to overbooking.

  1. In this age of globalization, free commece and increasingly open borders, the neighboring countries hold be sorting out this issue thrrough peaceful means and mutual understanding and in good faith, but I’m that erratic and hot-headed Abiy has already crossed line too far and in disrespectful manner and undiplomatic conduct, But I think also the big elephant in the room that influencimg , using and pushing Abiy and his regime both domestically and externally from one bad decision-making to another is coming to picture and in the puzzle again. : it is the notorious mercenary outsourcing and devious little Arab island of the UAE in the Middle East by inducing him with flush of cash for their own long-term businnes interest and exploitation purpose in the whole region by creating all kinds of conflicts, social collapse and mayhem and lawlessness. They are doing all this for not mutual benefit and an equal business profit partnership or acting as a real agent for progress and develiopmtal parternership issues but for their own wicked and sinister economic and geostrategic agendas.. So we are in for a long rough ride as long as they deal with and able to manipulate shallow and drifty leaders and personalities like Abiy Ahmed in Ethiopia and the region.

    • Here you go again. You are putting the blame on one side only. Why don’t you come out and tell us this banning of a civilian means of transportation by your country of Eritrea and Somalia is a coordinated effort to destroy the best airline in Africa. You too are carrying out your duties against Ethiopia as ordered by your boss Egypt. You should be ashamed of your servile capitulation to your slave drivers in Egypt. What makes you so madly hateful of Ethiopia? It has been filling your thankless belly for centuries.

  2. Finally, we can all say Somalia seems able to find the incarnate of Ziad Barre with this lost soul camping out at Villa Mogadishu. Boy, does he know how to stoop down to his masters in Al-Qahirah!!! Even our dear Somali brothers and sisters are saying ‘what is wrong with this guy?’ He travels more to meet with his master el-Sisi than to even a mile outside his fortified abode in Mogadishu. Just like dead and gone idol Ziad, he is craving for a distraction to survive. He wants to hatch and trigger a war with his black folks neighbors so he can add a day or two to his stay in power. He is a total disgrace not only to our very dear Somali brothers and sisters but to a Negro race.

  3. Dear Ittu Know It all, there is nothing wrong with Somalis defending and speaking up for their sovereignty and dignity. oh, don’t even bring up the race card. You are the one who is a disgrace to the black race. Remember, you once had a king that claimed that he was not black. Your nation and your airline threats Africans like dirt compared to how you stoop low for European customers. This is a fact, and, you know it!
