Toronto – Ethiopia has this week sworn in 24 new ambassadors to serve the country. President Sahlework Zewde, the President, is quoted as telling the new ambassadors “Appointment of Ethiopian Ambassadors Symbolic.” She said so in her speech at the swearing in ceremony, according to an update from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia. Taye Aske-Selassie, the Minister, was also present during the swearing in ceremony.
Unlike the customary political practice since the TPLF took power in 1991, the newly appointed ambassadors are mostly diplomats with experience in foreign diplomatic missions.
There was this practice of appointing Ambassadors from among undesirable power players in the ruling party or from ruling party politicians whose political stature is perceived as a liability to the ruling party on grounds of corruption or other ethical misconduct.
During his speech at the swearing in ceremony, Taye “encouraged the ambassadors to apply the ideas they acquired during the three-week training session to be creative, innovative, and aware of the ever-changing geopolitical landscape,” according to the MFAE news update.
The Ambassadors were appointed in May of this year and have been taking orientations and training. The foreign diplomatic missions to which the Ambassadors are appointed is undisclosed at this point.
