Toronto – Multiple local Ethiopian News sources reported large-scale and pervasive fighting between the Fano resistance movement and government forces in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

As was the case in the past, Ethiopian government forces do not seem to be able make meaningful gains. Rather, reports indicate that government forces continue to suffer losses in their war against Fano.

The Debre Berhan area in North Shoa was one of the areas where there was intensive wars. Unlike the case in the past where Fano forces primarily employed ambush military strategy, recent battles are said to be conventional wars.

Dr. Abdella, spokesperson of Shoa Fano, told Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) that government forces have lost a significant portion of the troops who were posted in the area.  One of the battles in the area was more than nine hours long, according to sources. No specified number if given regarding killed government soldiers.

Fano Forces in Gojjam have also reportedly launched a massive offensive. The regional capital Bahir Dar is said to be tense. The regional administration introduced new curfews. According to Ethio News, the regional government completed an evaluative meeting and there is consensus that Fano forces could not be defeated militarily and that negotiation is a must.   However, the Federal government has not publicly remarked on it.

Another key information is that the regional administration has unveiled that Fano forces have freed about 7,000 inmates across the region. Many of them are believed to have joined the Fano forces.

Gonder ( central, north and south) has also witnessed large-scale fighting between Fano forces and government forces in the past few days. The historic city and tourist attraction, Gondar town, itself was reported to be tense due to fighting in nearby areas. As is the case in Shewa and Gojam, dozens of government forces are killed.

Similarly, in Wollo Fnao forces have reportedly made military gains though Ambush attacks and conventional battles.

The Ethiopian government has not remarked about recent reports from the Amhara region. The government launched the military operation – which morphed into a full scale war – in August 2023 with a stated objective of “disarming” Fano forces. However, Fano forces noticeably emerged stronger and bigger out of the war, arming themselves from defeated government soldiers.

  1. As predicted by Tigray military analysts, the Oromo dominated army of the government is sustaining losses and defeats in the Amhara region. The regional powers Tigray and Eritrea have a stake in the conflict and the latter is actively training and arming the Amhara forces. The threat to Oromia which is the gift of Tigray to the Oromo people will call for Tigray military intervention.

  2. Response to Misleading Article on Fano Activities in the Amhara Region

The statement “Ethiopian gov’t forces still suffering losses in the Amhara region as Fano intensifies offensive” is nothing but the wishful thinking of a defeated and disorganized Fano. This biased and misleading account does not reflect the reality of the situation. The true nature and activities of the Fano militia in the region are far different from what is portrayed in the article. The reality of the Fano militia and its activities in the region is far different from what is portrayed in the article.

    Who are the Fano?

Fano is the most cowardly militia, living off century long Ethiopian heroism achieved collectively by various other ethnic groups, which they credit to themselves by distorting history. They have never truly engaged in any significant battlefield combat. The recent article by Borkena titled “Ethiopian gov’t forces still suffering losses in the Amhara region as Fano intensifies offensive” is nothing but the wishful thinking of a defeated and disorganized Fano. This biased and misleading account does not reflect the reality of the situation. The true nature and activities of the Fano militia in the region are far different from what is portrayed in the article.

    False Portrayal of Fano

Fano is often falsely portrayed as a powerful and organized separatist group. In reality, it is a loose collection of armed individuals from the Amhara region, known more for their chaotic and uncoordinated actions than for any cohesive military strategy. Fano has not been successful in any significant military engagements, often retreating quickly after minor skirmishes with the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) or regional government militias. The idea that they are a serious threat to the Ethiopian army is far-fetched, given their track record of fleeing to rural areas after exhausting their ammunition, sometimes even shooting into the air in a futile display of bravado.

    Propaganda and Exaggeration

The narrative of Fano’s supposed military successes is largely fueled by propaganda, often spread by poorly informed or deliberately misleading sources. These accounts exaggerate the group’s impact and capabilities, creating an illusion of a powerful resistance movement. In truth, Fano members are often poorly trained and equipped, and their operations lack the strategic depth required for sustained combat. Their claims of grand ambitions, such as capturing Addis Ababa or liberating the Amhara people, are not only unrealistic but a wishful thinking

    Internal Disorganization and Infighting

Another critical issue within Fano is the lack of unity and coordination among its members. The group is riddled with internal divisions, with self-proclaimed leaders and generals often at odds with each other. This infighting further undermines any semblance of a coherent strategy or objective. The idea that Fano could present a united front or achieve significant political or military goals is thus a fallacy, propagated by those who either misunderstand or deliberately distort the situation.

Detrimental Impact on the Amhara Region

Far from being protectors of the Amhara region, Fano’s actions have often brought more harm than good. Reports of them freeing thousands of inmates, potentially increasing local instability, are troubling. Their activities have not only destabilized the region but have also caused suffering among the very people they claim to protect. The romanticization of their cause ignores the reality that most residents of the region seek peace and stability, not chaos and conflict.

    Reality Check and Advice

It is essential for the public to be aware of the true nature of groups like Fano. The idea of Fano as a liberating force is a fantasy, propagated by a small group of radicals and ill-informed propagandists. Their so-called struggle is more about promoting hatred and division The Ethiopian government and the majority of the people in the Amhara region are focused on progress and reform, not on pursuing a destructive and hopeless conflict.

To those influenced by these misleading narratives: it is crucial to seek out accurate information and understand the real dynamics at play. Supporting such groups is not only futile but also harmful. The future lies in unity, reform, and education, not in the destructive path promoted by fringe elements. It’s time to abandon the delusions of grandeur and work towards building a peaceful and prosperous Ethiopia for all.

  3. Government and generals promised to squash Fano in just 2 weeks, with their supperior number of soldiers superior fire power, drones, tanks, almost infinite budget, control of the social media, year long “emergency states” and more.
Fano initially only had their old rifles, old AK-47, maybe a few mortars but through continuous victories over the federal army they are now armed a lot better (but still not at the same level with the army). What they lack in equipment and money they make up with bravery, guerrilla tactics and most of all because they believe they fight for justice and survival, they have increased their numbers. Defections from the army to the Fanos (from simple soldiers to generals) has given them experience and are hardened by battle. But the real reason why they army cannot and will not win is that Fanos have the support of the people and the moral high ground.
So, all your arguments and mud throwing are meaningless and empty, showing desperation and failure to accept reality. Soon the government will be forced to negotiate with them from a defeated position. The oromuma dreams based on historical fabrications and pseudo-science have been squashed because they fight a superior culture and people that are dying for a higher cause.
The sooner this gets through your thick skull the better.

    • The Bigotry and Racist Mindset of Fano Militia

It is disheartening to see the perpetuation of a bigoted and racist mindset by members of Fano, who, while hiding behind trees somewhere in Gonder, portray themselves as heroes and liberators. What is most shocking is the ignorance and racism that persist among these individuals, who believe they possess a superior culture, thereby deeming the Oromo and other ethnic groups as inferior. They claim to be fighting for a higher cause, supposedly the church, yet they fail to recognize the profound contributions of others to Ethiopian culture.

Fano members are often vulgar, boorish, and coarse. They do not seem to understand that their actions and attitudes undermine the very principles of unity and respect that are essential for a cohesive society. It is worth mentioning that it was King Abba Jifar who contributed significantly and elevated the Fano culture. He taught Emperor Menelik II how to maintain personal hygiene, a practice that was foreign to him until then. King Abba Jifar also gifted Emperor Menelik his first shoes. The Oromo culture, which Fano members deride, brought gentleness and politeness to Ethiopian society, enriching it in many ways.

As for the higher cause they claim to champion, it is evident that Fano members lack a true understanding of their own religion. They rely on house-published books like “Kidane Mihret” instead of engaging deeply with the Bible. This superficial engagement with their faith further highlights their ignorance. Only those who are truly ignorant join Fano. Even if the entire region were to join Fano, they would not make any significant impact or change.

In conclusion, it is crucial to recognize and address the harmful and divisive rhetoric propagated by Fano. Ethiopian society must strive for unity, respect, and mutual understanding, rejecting the bigotry and racism that Fano embodies. True progress and change come from embracing our diverse cultural heritage and working together towards a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
