The TPLF has a history of using news of “division” within the organization as a strategic approach to engage in Ethiopian political but the recent one seems to be a real and deeper one

Toronto – the Tigray region of Ethiopia has been in an anarchical state since the end of the two-year war following the Pretoria agreement in November 2022. And now it appears to be the case that it has something to do with the internal problem within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Head of the Interim administration in the region, Getachew Reda, is on record for saying that there have been secret prisons in the region not known to his administration and that the Security situation has become even more difficult for government officials.
His recent interview with Demsti Woyane reveals more information about the recently reported division within the TPLF.
Getachew himself was singled out during a party meeting and targeted for signing a treaty agreeing on the end of the TPLF-led regional government in the region. He is accused of implementing it, based on the interview he gave to Demtsi Woyane. He added that his administration was unable to carry out its mandated responsibilities due to internal conflicts and political rivalries within the TPLF. The task of maintaining law and order in the region became difficult. Government resources including gold mining in the region have been illegally exploited by armed groups with links to TPLF factions in the organization.
The Pretoria agreement ended the two-year war which is said to have claimed nearly one million lives and Getachew was one of the TPLF representatives at the Pretoria Agreement in South Africa and signed it on its behalf. He is now seen as a traitor and a clique in the organization.
Getachew reportedly said ( the interview is in Tigrigna) that crimes like the abduction of women, rape, and human trafficking are happening in Tigray and the perpetrators are “our people” as he puts it and yet there was an accusation that “enemy forces” were committing the crimes.
“TPLF has been undertaking an organized character assassination campaign on me,” Getachew is cited as saying in a BBC Amharic report.
According to Getachew, the Pretoria agreement was part of the reason for the schism within the TPLF. The legal status of TPLF and related issues are among the causes of the division.
The TPLF was dismissed as a legally registered political party with the National Electoral Board Of Ethiopia (NEBE) after the parliament designated it as a terrorist organization in May 2021. However, Abiy Ahmed’s administration earlier this month gave instruction ( although it does not have the legal authority to do so) to accept the TPLF as a legal party under special consideration with which TPLF is not satisfied.
The organization now wants to undertake a party congress without fulfilling the legal and administrative procedures with NEBE. The situation is creating a concern for war. The organization still has over 200,000 armed combatants, as Debretsion (chairman of the organization) recently confirmed to the media.
Last week, Abiy Ahmed stated that if TPLF does not fulfill the legal requirements with NEBE and goes ahead with its party congress it could mean another war.
Western Powers representatives have been repeatedly traveling to the Tigray region with the cover of discussing “implementation of the Pretoria Agreement.”
