Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is vowing that it will go ahead with the plan to hold its first party congress after a devastating two years war against the Abiy Ahmed led Federal government which spilled over to Afar and Amhara regions of Ethiopia.
The TPLF said so days after the Ethiopian Prime Minister remarked that TPLF Party Congress without registration and clearance from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia may mean another war.
The TPLF has already named a committee entrusted to prepare its 14th congress , according to the announcement it shared on its social media page this week after Abiy Ahmed’s hit about possible war with the TPLF.
The TPLF says “no one can stop us from undertaking the congress.” The TPLF wants to bypass the legal and administrative process of reinstating itself as a legal party with the National electoral board.
What it wants, as has been reported by some sources this week, is a political decision from Abiy Ahmed’s government to attain its legal status again.
It was dismissed as a legitimate political entity after the Ethiopian Parliament designated it as a “terrorist organization” in May 2021 on grounds of military adventure that pursued about four years ago – a process that dragged Ethiopia to one of the bloodiest wars in its history.
Apart from the warning from the Federal government, the TPLF is also facing opposition from its own Audit Commission. The commission has announced that it will not take part in the party congress.
The commission earlier this week disclosed that there is a networked group within the organization. It criticized the organization that anti-democratic practices and transparency problems are observed.
Some leaders of opposition parties that are operating in the Tigray region of Ethiopia are expressing concern about developments within the TPLF.
VOA Amharic cited Amdom Gebreselassie, chairman of “Arena Tigray for Democracy and Sovereignty Party’ as saying that the division within the TPLF leaders – which he says is grounded on selfish motives of the leaders – could widen and lead to conflict.
There has been recurring reports after the end of the war that the region witnessed rise in crime rates – including kidnapping for ransom, rape and extraction of gold from state owned mining site illegally. The illegal groups are said to have links with some TPLF officials. Recently, the Interim administration in Tigray announced that it has started enforcing law.
