Ethiopia signs over U.S $86 million Grant Agreement with UNICEF, UNFPA

The funds will be spent for the programs the agencies are running in Ethiopia

Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance on Thursday announced that it has signed a U.S.$ 86.18 funding agreement with UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and  United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA ). 

Semereta Sewasew, Ethiopia’s State Ministry of Finance,  Mariko Kagoshima, UNICEF Deputy Representative to Ethiopia, and  Taiwo Oluyomi, UNFPA Deputy Representative to Ethiopia, signed the agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. 

The fund is intended to finance the operation of organizations to “implement the agencies’ ongoing country program in the 2017 [2024/25 G.C.]  Ethiopian Fiscal Year. “

The bulk of the funding is from UNICEF. It is spending U.S. $70 million to finance the implementation of development programs. it focuses on Water, nutrition, education, health, sanitation, child protection, and gender projects – according to the news update from the Ministry of Finance. 

UNFPA  is spending the remaining portion of the agreement on programs related to family planning, maternal health, adolescent and youth development, gender equality, and women empowerment projects. 

It is also indicated that the agencies will be implementing the final phase of the current programs in the country.

  1. This funding is for a good cause and purpose. When I see one of our daughters/sisters in charge of dispensing the grant it gives me hope that every cent will be spent as intended to keep children healthy and protected. That country is facing health issues due to communicable diseases like malaria, cholera and other deadly pathogens. Good luck.
