Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is saying that it is facing unprecedented challenges in its 50 years of existence.

In a statement it released on Tuesday after concluding days of party meetings in the Tigray regional capital, Mekelle, it said “prioritizing personal  gains” has posed an existential threat to the organization.

The problem is surfacing within the central committee of the organization, according to BBC Amharic which cited the statement from the organization.

Partisan interest that is drifted from the “people’s cause” and forming alliances on the basis of personal gains are identified as challenges. And the party is making it sound as if it is a new phenomenon within the TPLF.

“Clannism, populism, corruption, anti-democratic move, and cliquism” are the challenges that are facing the TPLF – an organization that ruled Ethiopia with Iron fist leading the umbrella coalition it crafted in 1991- with economic and diplomatic support from the United States and its allies – for nearly three decades.

The internal problem the organization is facing could be detrimental to its existence.  The division with the crem de la crem of the organization has been a burden to the people in the region, based on the report from BBC Amharic.

The production and management of mineral resources in the region has been one of the major problems. The party has admitted the problem in that area. In recent times, authorities in the region and armed groups had been said to be involved in the exploitation of minerals in the region, it was said. Illegal appropriation of land is another challenge that the TPLF faced, according to the report. It vows to restore order to it.

The TPLF has also demanded a direct representation within the Federal government. The Ethiopian Parliament designated the organizations as a terrorist group in May 2021 after TPLF launched a devastating military campaign in Afar and Amhara regions during the two years war that it triggered when it attacked the Northern Command off the Ethiopian Defense Force in November 2020. But the designation was already lifted after the Pretoria agreement. It was also dismissed as a legally registered political  party with the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia.

In June of this year, Abiy  Ahmed’s administration enacted a new legislation to accept TPLF as a legal party. The Minister For Justice, Gedion Timotheos, last week officially requested the National Electoral Board to accept the TPLF as a legal party under special consideration. At this time, the TPLF is said to have well over 270,000 armed combatants and Abiy Ahmed’s government decision to accept the TPLF as a legal opposition party has raised eyebrows.
