Unqualified ‘Activists’ are Undermining the Amhara Cause

Ethnic Amhara people have been victims of politically motivated and distorted narrative for over fifty years now.

By Maleda

Amidst a genocidal war on the Amhara people, a troubling division is taking place within the Amhara struggle. This division, spanning from political ideologies to strategic approaches, is heightened by the lack of a clear vision and unified leadership. Fanos resistance, spread across various provinces, still lacks a central command structure, which adds an additional layer to the divide.

At the heart of this disunity is the absence of a well defined direction for the Amhara struggle. Leaders both in Ethiopia and the diaspora have yet to articulate a clear political ideology and direction. This has created a vacuum that’s been filled with social media ‘activists’. It is best to refer to these ‘activists’ as influencers as the term activist is not befitting. These influencers, often not well-informed, are setting the tone for advocacy and political agendas. Unfortunately, many of these influencers are driven by emotional reactions, provincial loyalty, and sensationalism instead of facts or strategic thinking. Their large followings on platforms such as Twitter and TikTok has only made their impact substantial. Although, they lack political knowledge, historical understanding, and sometimes even common sense they have managed to garner support and influence.

The misinformation and divisive rhetoric spread by these influencers has shifted focus from the primary objective of the Amhara struggle. Their emotionally charged actions are obvious to anyone following Amhara politics. Their lack of credibility and basic understanding of advocacy and politics has severely undermined the Amhara cause and eroded trust within the community.

Looking at recent history, we can understand the danger of this dynamic. Take the Arab Spring, for example. Social media played a pivotal  role in mobilizing protests. However, the absence of unified leadership led to fragmented movements, and many failed to achieve long term goals. The Amhara struggle faces a similar risk of losing its direction and effectiveness if it keeps relying on these unqualified influencers.

To remedy this, the focus needs to shift to professional, informed advocates who understand international law, politics, and history. Amharas must support and give platforms to individuals who can offer strategic directions and articulate the Amhara cause effectively. This should include young voices with fresh perspectives and seasoned individuals with wisdom and experience.

Most importantly, Amharas must learn to critically consume information. Fact checking and promoting credible sources are vital to minimize the impact of disinformation. If this problem is not addressed immediately,  advocacy efforts and support for Fanos’ resistance will be severely crippled.

By withdrawing support from divisive, uninformed influencers and empowering competent advocates, the Amhara struggle can be strengthened. It’s time to rethink our approach and re-energize the Amhara people and ensure that our fight for justice and survival is guided by wisdom and truth. Not only because that’s the only suitable path but because the Amhara people deserve better.

  1. These so called activists thrive in countries where the educational level is low. They have a large following on social media, because they tell their audience what they wanted to hear.
Evnrhough the access to information has never been easier (you don’t even need to visit a library any more, you can Google everything and if you search deep enough you will find truth), these “activists” no matter which side they support, know that their followers don’t know history, don’t know economics, don’t know the international relationships, don’t know the power centers and where decisions are made. Most of all, they know that without knowing good English their audience is unable to fact check for the truth. Uneducated people are gullible people and will believe anything that boosts their pride and low self-esteem and vilify others for their own shortcomings and suffering. And the “activists: profit from people’s ignorance. The same story and reasons that the Prosperity Gospel false theology is thriving in Africa….
There is no way a government can counter this, as long as it doesn’t focus on education. But educated and open minded people are a threat to tyrannical governments, so they don’t mind keeping their citizens in the darkness of ignorance. How many millions of students are out of school the last 3 years, what will happen to this lost generation and the one following? They will either become extremists or live poor, unfullfiling lives.
It is a global phenomenon, but especially strong in countries without a strong educational system, without a common accepted history and most of all in countries like Ethiopia that lack a shared narrative miss an end goal that is as inclusive as possible. While the sheep is grazing the wolves sharpen their teeth.

    • Toronto, the megalopolis of Canada where Borkena studio of misinformation is located , reels from floods and power cuts after severe storms
The storm left more than 167,000 customers without power, according to Toronto Hydro.
Authorities said they have rescued at least 14 people, including one person who had to be plucked from their car’s roof
“We had 25 per cent more rain in three hours than we’d have normally in the whole month of July with all the thunderstorms and systems that moved through,” meteorologist Dave Phillips told local news station CP24.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority warned that areas near shorelines, rivers and streams in the city are especially prone to flooding. There are more than a dozen rivers and streams in Toronto, making it vulnerable to rising water levels.

  2. Thank you Maleda for your piece. You are the first person who took head on the problem of the Amhara- Fano and activists issue and lack of direction, strugle led bybmisinformation and emotions. I hope they head your advice. You expressed what I have been telling my amhara freinds. The response I get most of the time is “ante tsere amara neh” which is unfortunate.

Angelo, if you noticed the one that are educated, and live in AMerica and EURope are the once leading the emotion driven Fano struggle. It has nothing to do with education, these people are the most educated of the AMharas as far as I know.
