Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is now seeking for a direct representation within the Federal government, according to a report published by Ethiopian Reporter on Saturday, one of the local news sources in the county.

The organization has formally requested the Federal government and an agreement is reached to implement that through dialogue with the Federal government. Whether the TPLF is going to join the ruling prosperity party or not, it is unclear. This year, there have been three rounds of political dialogue between the organization and the ruling party.

Last month, the Federal government legislated a law – which the parliament approved – to make the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia accept the TPLF under “special consideration.”  The Organization lost its legal political party status after it attacked the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force under unsuspecting circumstances. At least three thousand defense force members were killed in the attack, according to Eritrean government sources. Ethiopia was dragged to one of the most brutal wars in its entire history that is said to have caused the loss of an estimated one million people from Afar, Amhara and Tigray regions – among others.

Abiy Ahmed’s ruling party and TPLF started to forge what appears to be a military and political alliance soon after the Pretoria Agreement. There is a belief among some activists that the United States and its allies were behind the Pretoria Agreement despite appearing as if it was  the African Union initiative.

According to the Reporter’s Report, the TPLF issued a statement on Thursday this week asking Abiy Ahmed’s government to have direct representation. It also asked for the release of ethnic Tigray members of the Ethiopian Defense Force and for the restoration of its legal status. As has been reported repeatedly, although the core of the Pretoria Agreement was for the TPLF to disarm its forces the organization still has over 270,000 armed combatants. If the legal status is officially restored, it will be the only opposition political party to have an armed force of its own.

Last week, there was a second round evaluative meeting into the implementation of the Pretoria agreement. The U.S. Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa was in Addis Ababa to attend it.

European Union Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa was in Mekelle, last Thursday, where she held discussion with Getachew Reda, president of the Interim government in Tigray and former spokesperson of the TPLF.

  1. Before TPLF’s representation in the Federal government….the following Cessation of Hostilies (COH) agreement signed in Pretoria should be completed. 1) Disarmament and Demobilization and Rehabilitation of TPLF army should be complete 2) Other requirements of COH regarding war crimes and transitional justice underway should be completed 3) Elections should be held in Tigray with the opposition parties participating in a free and fair regional election with the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) overseeing and conducting the elections. 4)The timing should be determined by the NEBE.
5)The wining candidates in Tigray election determined by the NEBE should represent Tigray in the Federal government.

NO shortcuts! This process may take time and may coincide with the next national election when PM Abiy runs again for reelection. This may be a realistic approach.

  2. The title, “TPLF Demands Direct Representation” should be corrected to “TPLF Requests Direct Representation.” Thinking in Amharic while writing in English is a challenge and a source of much misinformation.
