Toronto – Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) – a government entity – is reportedly opposing government regulation, introduced in late January this year. that imposed restrictions on the import of non-electric cars. It appears that EIC tends to see it as something that defeats the purpose of the commission – attracting investment to the country, among other things.
According to a Wazema Radio report, the commission says the policy is “illegal and harmful.” What the Commission is asking for might require amendment of the regulation introduced by the Ministry of Transport.
The Ministry said that it introduced the regulation with the aim to reduce carbon emission. Alemu Sime, the Minister, revealed it at the parliament when he talked about the “Green Transport” initiative of the Prosperity Party government. At the time, he added that the creation of electric car charging stations was in progress.
At the time, the regulation made headlines raising eyebrows in view of infrastructure underdevelopment and regular power outages in the country.
