Recently, the Prime Minister launched a verbal assault on the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and its Commissioner, Dr. Daniel Bekele. In a troubling turn of events, the Commissioner was swiftly relieved of his duties the same week. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) stood as a beacon of democracy and institutional integrity in Ethiopia, largely due to the character and professionalism of Dr. Daniel Bekele.
Dr. Daniel is known for his unwavering professionalism, discipline, and moderation. His dedication to upholding human rights standards is beyond reproach, despite baseless accusations of politicizing human rights by the Prime Minister. The current government’s track record paints a grim picture, with millions of lives lost or displaced, placing Ethiopia at the forefront of the global crisis in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The region of Tigray has been ravaged by conflict, sparked by hardline factions like the TPLF and Oromo elites, alongside clashes involving the OLF and more radical government factions. Amidst these conflicts, the Amhara community finds itself unfairly targeted, with blame shifting and scapegoating rampant among all parties involved.
In the southern regions, calls for increased autonomy have led to heinous crimes against humanity, particularly aimed at the Amhara populace as outsiders deemed unworthy of life and property. Fano forces now stand in solidarity with the Amhara community and Ethiopia, working to free the nation from the misguided actions of ethno-nationalists driven by greed and ignorance.
Ethiopia is in dire need of a steadfast Human Rights Commissioner like Dr. Daniel, who consistently and impartially reports on the egregious human rights violations plaguing the nation. From mass murders to forced evictions, human trafficking to summary executions, and enforced disappearances, Dr. Daniel has fearlessly shed light on these atrocities. He has bravely pointed fingers at the incumbent government as a major perpetrator of these crimes, exposing instances of genocide, rape, crimes against humanity, and systemic torture within its own correctional facilities. These acts brought forth the wrath of the PM.
