Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday traveled to Sudan on a one day working visit. He was received at Port Sudan – a Sudanese port city on the Red Sea.
“Since the challenges faced by the people of Sudan are also our challenges, and their peace is our peace, we are committed to working towards the relief and prosperity of the Sudanese people,” Abiy wrote on his social media page. And the office of the PM said he is in Sudan “continuing his commitment to finding sustainable solutions for Sudan’s stability.”
A day before his trip, some Ethiopian news sources reported that Abiy is traveling to Sudan carrying a message from the United Arab Emirates – something that is unconfirmed by others sources.
According to SUNA, a Sudanese government news source, the trip seems to focus on the relation between the two countries. Abiy met with Al Burhan, President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
They discussed , “the progress of the relations between the two countries and ways to develop the prospects for joint cooperation between Khartoum and Addis Ababa,” as reported by SUNA.
Sudan and Ethiopia developed a sour relation during the two years war between Abiy Ahmed’s government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). When the Ethiopian Defense Force posted along the Ethio-Sudan border was withdrawn for deployment in response to TPLF war – which was described at the time as “law enforcement operation” – the Sudanese Forces invaded Ethiopia and controlled up to 70 kilometers deep into Ethiopia.
Al Burhan was claiming the land as part of Sudan. When Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appeared in the parliament last week, he made a reference to the situation. He expressed interest in resolving the matter diplomatically although Ethiopia is in “a military position to recover the invaded land militarily.”
Abiy Ahmed’s trip to Sudan to find a “solution to the problem in Sudan ” came a day after President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Eritrea – for a third time in less than six months. Abiy Ahmed trip to Sudan to “find solution to the conflict in the country” between RSF leader and Al Burhan drew criticism on grounds that Ethiopia itself is rattled with conflict.
The war Abiy Ahmed’s government officially declared in August 2023 – with a stated objective of disarming Fano forces within a few weeks- is far from over. In the Oromia region, the military ethnic Oromo nationalist group that calls itself Oromo Liberation Army is battling government forces while running an extensive ransom kidnapping business. Last week, three busses of passengers were kidnapped in the Oromia region as they were traveling between Amhara region and Addis Ababa.
