Toronto – A drone strike is reported in Sheraro, along the Eritrean border in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
The strike targeted Gemehalo and Tekemati localities just outside Sheraro town. It took place on Friday evening around 11:30 p.m. local time. Gemehalo is only six kilometers from the Eritrean border.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) alleges that there was property damage as a result of the strike. An explosion was heard, followed by a huge fire soon after the attack, the TPLF has disclosed.
“The prosperity regime caused damage to the troops and their property with a drone strike in Sheraro, North East Tigray,” it said in a statement it released on Saturday.
However, the TPLF did not specify the extent of it or the number of casualties.
Gemehalo is an area where Army 13 of the TPLF is stationed. The explosion is linked to a possible attack on the TPLF arsenal, according to sources from the region.
It called the attack one that violates the Pretoria Agreement and has the intention to make the region kneel through war.
It also accused the Federal government of fostering a budget cut, embargo on fuel and medicine as part of its preparation for another round of war.
A day after the 7th general election in the country, which is extensively criticized, the TPLF released a statement calling on the international community to step in to reverse what it described as an impending devastating war that could affect the entire region.
The Ethiopian Defence Force did not remark on the alleged drone strike. However, the Federal government has been accusing the TPLF of making preparations to reignite the war with support from the Eritrean government.
Opposition politicians in the region have been warning about another round of war, for which they accused the TPLF, as tension has been building up between the Federal government on the one hand and what appears now to be an Eritrea-backed TPLF.
There were developments that worsened the situation. The TPLF removed the president of the interim administration of the Tigray region, General Tadesse Worede, who served as leader of the “Tigray Defence Force” during the 2020-2022 war between the TPLF-led administration and the Federal government. It has also reinstated the pre-war regional council and named Debretsion Gebremichael president of the region. The Federal government and opposition parties in the region see the actions as violations of the Pretoria Agreement.
The European Union and the United States government have been making diplomatic efforts to reverse another possible conflict in the region. These actors think it would be devastating if it breaks out. The outcome of their effort is yet to be seen in the weeks and months to come.

The regional power Tigray should declare the Pretoria agreement dead and void and resume its military operation to oust Abiy Ahmed. He is violating the cease fire in the agreement and Tigray has the legal ground to start military operation that will only end up with regime change in Ethiopia. His forces can not defend him and nor will the Eritrean and Amhara forces which helped him when his forces abandoned their positions and surrendered in mass.
