Toronto – Ethiopian Patriarch His Holiness Abune Mathias says, “We heard the massacre of our spiritual children in Arsi with a broken heart.”

He conveyed a brief message on Wednesday, a day after the Arsi diocese of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church confirmed another tragic news about the massacre of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.

Church sources say 13 Christians ranging from 25 to 70 years of age were massacred in a horrifying and shocking manner in Aleko Teleta district Tefa Kebele of Arsi zone. Over 280 homes were burned to the ground.

The incident happened on Monday – during the national election day—as the country’s Prime Minister made claims that his security forces had foiled over 100 bombs intended to disrupt the election.

Sources from Arsi say thousands of armed militants encircled the district and unleashed a barbaric massacre. A church over 100 years old was burned as well.

Citizen reports on social media with links from Arsi, in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, report that at least 37 Orthodox Christians were brutally massacred. Hundreds were displaced, and dozens are still unaccounted for.

There have been recurring similar attacks in the same location over the past few years.

In his message on Wednesday, His Holiness questions, “We question as to how long this continues?”

He said government authorities should work to stop the attack and the chain of attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice or face the judgement of history in the future.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed did not bother to convey a message of condolence or promise an investigation into the attack that is increasingly looking like an endless one.
